Thread: The 153rd Open Championship

  1. #1

    The 153rd Open Championship

Brutal test on day one at links course Royal Portrush Northern Ireland.
Hard, damp and windy with slow play (McIlroy just finishing on the 18th on -1 after being out Five hours!).
Mixed fortunes for the top yanks with Scheffler a creditable 3 under and DeChambeau 7(seven) over!
The rough is proper rough and the semi rough is rough in contrast to the "normal" courses they play on tour.
Great to see the world's elite thrashing their way round a course like the rest of us

Today was a real battle for all of them. Thought a few of the afternoon starters would have bettered the -4 leaders, but all in all a great days golf to start the tournament off.
    Looking forward to tomorrow.

Rory hit two fairways. Makes his -1 quite impressive really. He was -3 at one point

Scheffle only hit three fairways as well and yet he’s only one shot off the lead. Rounds like McIlroy and Scheffle’s rather give the to claims that conditions were “brutal” yesterday, as does the fact that forty five of the field shot par or better. Portrush was the test an Open course should be and produced a very competitive leaderboard after day one.

Harman tearing it up shooting a 65, 6 under on the day 8 under overall.
McIlroy playing the 18th currently 2 under for the day and still in touch just as the rains come in.
Early birds get lucky as it's about to get even more brutal!

Actually it looks to be playing much better with little or no wind and even some sunshine!

Sheffler with a putt for a round of 63.

    Half a revolution short!
That to equal Lowry's course record too.

    Fantastic round 👏

    Fantastic round 👏
When he’s in the mood he’s relentless.

Boy is he in the mood today!

Some good scoring from plenty of others but Scheffler is in a class of his own.

When he’s on it, he’s like a machine. He will not come back to the pack tomorrow. Others will have to play out of their skin to catch him.

Just saw Fitzpatrick chipping at the 1st. He plays right handed but his left hand was below his right . Never seen that before, nothing from the commentators.

Stats will show Scheffler misses another fairway at the 1st .But from light rough puts his approach to a foot after Li had played a brilliant approach from the fairway. Both Birdie the 1st.

I can see Scheffler getting to 20 under.

Fitzpatrick is known for using a cross handed chipping technique.

The Americans always come to the fore when the Open becomes a pitch and putt competition in benign conditions - they should have on course wind machines.

What a round of golf, the accuracy and calm. Relentless is a good word. And he’s a likeable guy.

Big shout out for Chris Gotterup. Won last weeks Scottish open and finished 3rd today.
    Not a bad weeks earnings.

    Re: The 153rd Open Championship

I have to admit that I got rather bored watching the golf today.
Normally I'd watch every second but after the first few holes I just dipped in and out.
It was obvious that someone from the chasing pack had to play out of their skin to be in contention and pray that Scheffler had a disaster.
The latter was never going to happen, especially the way the weather turned out, and even if it played like the first couple of days wet and windy, the guy is so goddamn efficient it would probably have made no difference.

Bryson DeChambeau did well to finish on -9 and had he had half a decent first day, he may well have made a tournament of it.

Scheffler looks set to win many more majors in the future and a shoe in for the grand slam.

    Re: The 153rd Open Championship

Scheffler reminds me a bit of Faldo or Ernie Els. Almost metronomic and solid, without being a showman, making few mistakes and picking up shots regularly.
If he wins the grand slam next year he'll do so on his 30th birthday.

Foregone conclusion wasn’t it. Always hope for an exciting Sunday at a majo, and I had bet Rory 😩
