England have only themselves to blame for throwing away needless wickets.
If you disregard the one off matches v Ireland and Zimbabwe (which I have) - Bazzball England have played 42 tests and won 24. losing 16 and drawing 2. (Since Joe Root resigned after a woeful spell as skipper). But despite the glitz surrounding them, they have failed to beat India at home twice and drawn at home to Australia too. They have lost series in both India and Pakistan.
"Pump up your tattoos boys we are going to give the minnows a good thrashing when they come over here, but we might struggle a bit when we are on our travels. When the bigger boys come to the UK here let's make out we are the best but in reality it's probably even stevens..."
Two World series finals played since Bazzball and England have not featured.
Test cricket has always been the best format and I rest my case - but still love test cricket. However I would re-instate blazers and ban tracksuit shorts on the balcony. But I am 64.
I agree that there are advantages to the Bazball approach, but there needs to be a degree of common sense applied as well. Bethell played a shocking shot to get out. It was a shocking shot in any circumstances that a test match may throw up (especially by someone who was playing as a specialist batsmen). It showed India England couldn’t cope when they upped the pressure by using old fashioned virtues like bowling length and line.
England’s approach to batting also created a situation whereby their bowlers’ bodies could not cope with continually having to start bowling again often within hours of India’s first innings ending.
