I've held the view for years that the Likud Party and it's other zionist parties need Hamas and vice versa.

Likud have been open about their promotion (and funding) of Hamas for more than 20 years - to undermine Fatah.

It is no secret. The western liberal media have even started reporting on it (and quoting Bibi and other Likud leaders) in recent months.

There are some who feel that Israeli government's have funded Hamas to maintain an environment that allows them to strengthen opinion to pursue their own aims of Greater Israel.

I can't claim to have any proof of that but it certainly sounds very plausible. The level of naivety, compliance and partisanship of the West leaves me cold.
