Personally I don't think there has to be a new election, although as with so many things we will see in due course, if we don't, then it leaves Labour open to accusations of hypocrisy, as this is exactly what they called for after May, Johnson, Truss left office.

That said, I think it's quite likely one will happen. Labour has no majority and I don't sense Plaid are willing to play mummys and Daddy's anymore

Not least, they know that in any senedd election they may well improve their vote share and be in a position to dictate terms to Labour for a coalition.

I think Labours chances of getting a majority would be very low indeed
Labour have the most seats they can govern adequately with a new leader

I would be amazed if they dont do that

Plaid clearly backed the Tories for a chance to get more seats , they are almost as untrustworthy as gething

So the fair fighting handbook is out of the window

      Spot on.

Just read this in the G. https://www.theguardian.com/politics...litical-career

....all he had to do today was show some humility and acknowledge he f*cked up. All respect I had for him in the past has gone.

        He's an embarrassment

He should have resigned with grace and kept his opinions to himself for a while and allowed any successor to bed in and get some stability

        Shocking

He's been sowing the seeds that this reaction probably wouldn't have happened to a white politician for a while now. Really piss poor thing to do. I just hope that this doesn't become the accepted narrative in a few years time. He's gone because he's been dodgy, treated cabinet members poorly and he's lied, nothing more and nothing less.

Good chance of the Tories going down the toilet again like they did in the GE.

Good chance of PC and LDs picking up seats.

Very good chance of Labour increasing its number of seats despite the recent legacy.

But very good chance too of a very low turn out.
For reference, I don't get to vote in Wales anymore.

I take your point about Labour but I think Labour is a more tainted brand in Wales than England. However, I think you also need to factor in Reform in any Senedd election. It might be an opportunity for them to cement their place following their recent showing.

This could all have been avoided if he had:

first, said the donation was within the rules but he concedes it doesn't look good and would return any money not already spent.
second, ensured a fair investigation into the Hannah Blethyn allegations.

If I were Labour I wouldn't be too concerned about an election being called. If anyone needs to worry about that it'll be the Tories as they'll lose seats to Labour, Plaid, Lid Dems and, unfortunately, Reform who will pick up some proportional representation seats.

Jeremy Miles didn't handle missing out last time very professionally so I hope he doesn't get the gig

Fair point about Reform. They had a good few 2nd places in the GE - mainly in Valleys constituencies?

Chief beneficiaries would almost certainly be Reform, and to a lesser extent Plaid and perhaps Greens or Lib Dems.

Bear in mind that UKIP won 7 seats in 2016 on 13% of the Regional vote. Reform just got 17% of the vote in Wales and that's with limited chance of victory, although they did come close in Llanelli and came second in several seats.

Scratch the surface and Welsh Labour really aren't that popular. They got 37% of the vote in the General Election and with the "punish the govt" effect diluted and even reversed as it is turned against the party who has been in power in the senedd since 1999, I think you would see them get something like their 2007 perfornance when they had 24 out of 60 seats.

All that said, Andrewl RT Davies said on the news earlier that any senedd election would not reduce the need for another one in 2026. That seems very strange to me, but I guess makes one less likely.

Could be quite an interesting few months ahead. Can Labour stop their civil war? Will Lib Dems or Plaid step into an agreement for two years until the next elections? Will they try to govern with no majority?

It is. There will be 16 constituencies, each with 6 MSs.

Lib dems only have one seat

I think labour should go it alone , at least until things are a bit more stable

I think increasing the number of MPs , backed by Plaid is a huge mistake

Scotland have 129 in their parliament, Northern Ireland has 90. If anything, the Senedd has some catching up to do.
