    Yeh .

Nothing going on at the time strangely many countries applied austerity measures to manage the collapse of the markets , some silly pandemic, and wars effected goods and energy.

After all that the economy was left in a relatvely robust position to allow the current government to prop up huge public sector wage increases , slash the evil dreadful winter fuel allowances

( bugger the private sector , new investment , elderly,
we just need jeep aboard our unions funding , and public sector voters )

Bloody Tory donors and thier descreste rich funding behaviours .

Such hypocrisy from Labour and it's blinkered voters all 9 million of them .

One fact to hold onto :

80% of registered voters in the UK didn’t vote for Labour at the last election, hence the rush to pay back it's paymasters.

Don't worry it will eventually hurt us all on the coming years except for the sad frozen elderly.

For once you got something right.

Only 1 in 5 registered voters supported Labour at the General Election (or 34% of those that actually voted).

So one third of the votes cast for two thirds of the seats.

But Labour's 'paymasters' are not the trade unions. They account for about 25% of Labour funding (or did in 2023, but maybe less in 2024).

Most of Labour's paymasters are rich private donors (with their own agendas), companies (usually UK based but not all) and organisations that represent other interests (usually not green, worker or equalities based) that seek to influence government decisions (and maybe get a few more of their representatives into the House of Lords).

Nearly every country did it. The EU enforced it upon Greece, remember?

What was a choice was the extent of austerity, but the act of it itself was not really a choice.

But my point here was the hypocrisy.

It's not remotely bollocks. Show me a country with a large deficit in 2009-2010 who didn't undergo any austerity in order to appease lenders.

It's absolutely the case the EU required it from Greece for bailouts.

Austerity was and is a political choice:

Joseph Stiglitz, professor at Columbia University and a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics, says Europe needs to focus on growth assistance rather than austerity.

And what major economies of all political colours faced with huge budget deficits felt they could go down that route? Certainly not in Europe where the EU have very strict budget deficit rules. The country that tried to challenge that - Greece - eventually buckled.

So an illusion of choice perhaps and the extent of it was a choice but I don't think any would have got away with continuing to spend as they were pre 2009.

Wait until digital.I.D , facial recognition, and freedom of speech rights get clamped down on and the appetite for a cashless society kicks in. Probably wasn’t brought in by Labour though but they are pressing ahead with the policy’s all the same.

What would you call those policies out of interest?

Interesting reply , and you’re probably right for now ……… but long term it will get more and more autocratic.

Fair point well have to wait and see. I'm not a libertarian though so of course my views could appear skewed to some.
