  • Outdoor smoking ban?

Interesting one this. I've never been a smoker and probably have had less than 25 in my entire life. I also actively dislike vaping. But it's a step too far to ban smoking outside surely?

I think we need a real reset in this country when it comes to the importance of mixing and socialising as everything seems to be pushing against it. I'm a huge believer in pubs as community spaces too and this would severely damage many.

    Thoughts?

I love this idea. I've never smoked and detest it with a vengeance. The obnoxious stink of tobacco smoke from outside is an invasion of personal space in my opinion, especially when you're trying to enjoy a meal. This proposal gets an unqualified 👍❤️ from me!

How do you " Actively" dislike vaping Jim? Do you physically stop people from doing it? As for the article, I like a smoke now and then, but really don't like it when I'm around people who don't smoke or who don't like smoking, they hate it and I can't enjoy it. So I have no problem if smoking is marginalized ever more that it is already. The way I see it is that it my (occasional) habit and it shouldn't affect another person's enjoyment. Not that I would smoke around people anyway.

Actively dislike in the sense that I will talk about how I don't like it! As opposed to mushrooms which I don't like but it rarely comes up in conversation.

Not a fan of banning smoking outside pubs. All a bit oppressive and intolerant for me

I used to smoke and still occasionally do with a pint and I'd miss the opportunity to do that if this came in. Not against it though, in about a decade young people will be incredulous that people used to actively partake in something that was expensive and gave you cancer. Surely not even you can find something to argue against in the concept of a smoke free society when smoking is proven to kill!

Well I don't smoke as I say, but I do understand we all have our vices that help deal with stressful lives. For many of us it's booze (which also kills) for many it's fags, some go for food, the lucky ones will get a hit from running or knitting or even football.

I'm more of a live and let live kind. I think allowing smoking outside is probably the right balance, as I'm not a puritan on these things. Id support a small number of pubs to have licensed indoor smoking and weed smoking too tbh. That's my preference - licensing, not bans.

There is a pub in Bristol that always permits smoking weed in their pub garden. If you don't like it you don't have to go there and that's my kinda general approach and for smoking I think permitting it outside is generally the right balance. If certain pubs want to ban it (or swearing or football shirts or anything else) then up to them, but I don't think it's the governments role.

it's a public health issue, the government getting involved in it isn't a particularly wild concept. I suppose the theory is if you take smoking off the table then eventually people will find healthier ways of dealing with stressful lives.

Again, I can't stress enough how utterly insane it is that people smoke when a pack of 20 costs upwards of £15 and we know for a fact that it can kill you, and again, I say this as an occasional smoker.

I'm not pro government interference in every facet of our lives but an outright ban on smoking is pretty low down the list of terrible things that governments can do to their populace. It would literally guarantee a healthier population from that point onwards. Do I want them to do it? Not really. Do I think it's terrible for them to do so? No

Yeah sure, definitely not the worst thing they could do in the grand scheme of things, but still a negative for me. I think govts underestimate the social costs of isolation, stress and the like and the importance of social interaction, and this has the potential to impact that further.

Yeah, mental buying fags for £15 and rattling through them in a day or two.

In fact, one thing I would support is limiting the size of packets, perhaps to six or so. Mind you, I suppose that would also make them cheaper

I've always thought it'd be good if you could buy them individually from machines in pubs. The thing with fags is if you've got them you'll smoke them but if you just buy them individually I think people would smoke less

Yeah I agree. I think 1-2 on a night out is pretty common and it's hard to see the long term problems from that really. Particularly in adult am environments.

Tories are right to oppose it and I get the point but that is absolutely ridiculous 🤣

                            So smoking 20 a day equates to a staggering £5475 p.a. - that's insane! Even just 10 a day then, at £2737 p.a., is a huge amount of money.

It is interesting that the proposed ban for youngsters under Sunak quietly got shelved from the election manifesto, despite him saying he would be so proud of it - down to the smoking lobby of course.
Now, this proposal will see the death of pubs so we are told - more nonsense. They were already pricing themselves out of business.
Then the idiots start banging on about personal choice - yes their choice to blow poison into others faces. We can’t choose to do what we like on many things, why is poisoning other people so sacred?
