Re: Free Speech
Binary choice - for or against? I am somewhere in between.
I am in favour of some restrictions on unfettered 'free speech'. The obvious ones of incitement to violence or abuse.... most of which are already covered (in the UK) by existing laws. I am also in favour of flagging some types of dangerous disinformation - like pushing poisons as medical cures or promoting suicide clubs - if not banning it outright. In some cases there should be a ban.
'No platform' on political grounds has to be a last resort and only used in the most extreme cases.
The problems, of course are who decides what is incitement, what is disinformation, and what the impact is likely to be (a judgement).
I want to protect the right to satire. I want to protect the rights of people to make contrary political arguments and interpretations of events. I don't want rich individuals or conservative state organs to decide these thinks - not 'The Lord Chancellor's Office' of old and certainly not Elon Musk.
The internet should not be in the hands of either libertarians or control freaks.

Re: Free Speech
That's a very comprehensive and reasonable view IMO. I see the Australian government want to exempt themselves from the same laws that they want their citizens to obey. It will be interesting to see how things develop, as we are close experiencing an unprecedented divergence between various western allies.Originally posted by jon1959 View PostBinary choice - for or against?
