Thank flip the religious lot who pretend they object for moral or medical reasons but it's all about their faith the charlatans .....were defeated

Now the second phase can get on with sorting out a more reasoned approach and stop these air bags in parliament running things

It's not going to be used on those with disability, mental ill health and other scare stories whipped up by the usual suspects

I wonder if that wonderful man Rob Burrows would have chosen to end his own life in his final days .....I know I would have with MND.. or spend time with his top mate Kevin , his beautiful wife and kids and parents

Hopefully very soon it will be the choice of people like that and not those who know best for us on the reason they believe in ghosts in the sky and angels and other such stuff

On balance I'm in favour of some kind of legislation that allows this, and it's good to see parliament having a genuinely open debate on it, with support and opposition crossing party lines as it probably should on moral questions like this.

Obviously some pretty stringent safeguards are needed and I suspect it's a long time before we see this become law but I think it's the right move. This at least allows the discussion to move forward and bills to be prepared and voted on etc

Haven't been on in forever (not logged in anyway just re-reading dad's old posts and laughing at you all bickering in those old threads) thought I'd see what's you all thought about this vote after hearing dad's story.

I don't know if you all remember him saying he considered dignitas, he'd have been very happy today to know that this is going to be an option for people here at some point in the future. (He was following the discussions that were taking place last year)

Unsure how it would work with conditions like MND/similar but, for those who have these "death sentence" illnesses, I hope this brings them the peace of mind that this would have brought dad had he had this choice.

I know for for sure, dad would have rather that than have to try by his own means / be forced to go through the horrors of losing his dignity and independence that MND did to him. I like to think to think he'd have been happy knowing this change will be coming.

Safeguards are absolutely needed and I expect in time we'll hear more about all of it but today marks a major move forward for those who would choose to go than suffer through to the end.

A step in the right direction,. but how it "assisted dying" if the rules insist the fatal drug must be self-administered?
Eg a guy with MND (for instance,)might be able to say yes, 2 doctors and a judge say yes, but how will he do it to himself?

If it's Pill form I assume the LD50 will be given to the person who has taken the decision his in law he holds and he will be helped to take the tablets or press the button which administers the medicine to his bloodstream

If he is at the stage where he can only communicate with mouth movement then I would assume something will enable him to make the decision by that or if not by eye movement , blinks etc

I would think that if a doctor is asking a patient that by winking 3 times with his right eye he wants the doctor , on his behalf to press the button that introduces the required dose into his body .....that sort of process

With my father recently passed and the situation of how he passed this is a difficult situation for us, personally when it's my time I'd like to be able to choose. Doris knows my wishes.

The assisted dying bill will not apply unless your condition is terminal within 6 months. Are you referring to a situation where you might be suffering from a long term medical condition like Parkinsons which renders you incontinent and immobile? If so then this bill will not help you. The latter is the fate I dread the most, having seen different friends/relatives deteriorate slowly in nursing homes and almost begging to be put out of their misery. For me this new bill does not go far enough.
