  • Mandatory Digital ID Cards

I know that the Covid Lab leak thread has gone off on a tangent to talk about ID cards.
I think it needs its own thread though as the ramifications are massive.

To me it’s Orwellian and Authoritarian.
It’s not likely to effect me unless I move back one day, but for future generations…to be basically be tracked constantly by the government appalls me.

I imagine there would be poll tax type riots over this.

Anyway, here is the petition to stop it if you are so inclined.

We demand that the UK Government immediately commits to not introducing a digital ID cards. There are reports that this is being looked at.

But people are happy to be tracked by Google, Meta, Apple, Microsoft. What’s the difference?

It’s horrible that they do that.
The main difference is that it isn’t mandatory.

It would put in place an infrastructure to control or limit people.
It might not start like that…but the option is there and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in the future.

It kind of is mandatory though in this day and age. Who's going to live without phones, tablets, or computers? Yes, I know we're meant to have the option of rejecting or accepting cookies, but that only goes so far when protecting your anonymity.

Stevo will be giving his DNA next and not seeing any problem. All in the interest of national security. The government has my N.I number, my Passport number, my driving licence number, my outgoings and where the outgoings are spent, my income and who it is from, and as Stevo has rightly said, they know where I goto and when I go, when I have a shit but for Stevo and the massive this isn't enough, COVID proved that the majority will do absolutely anything the government tells them to do without question, I'll not be able to resist this mandate and will have to comply and so I will but I will drag it out to the bitter end.
I think the government has enough information on me without needing any more, I'm not sure this could be said for everyone in this country but the majority of law abiding citizens will be the ones paying the price, it would be like Americans giving up their guns in an amnesty and then leaving the criminals to flourish as they would not hand over theirs !!!!! The world has flipped, yesterday's poll tax demonstrator is today's water carrier for Draconian measures.

All you need to know is that Starmer thinks it’s a good idea

              I'm against it.

It will end up costing a tonne, will duplicate loads of data already held anyway, will be a security risk and will solve absolutely nothing.

You also have to keep an eye on the ever growing reach of governments and corporations to control our lives.

What is the benefit here? It won't stop illegal work and illegal immigration. That is absolute gaslighting of the highest order.

Have you thought of offering your incomparable knowledge and expertise on the subject to world wide governments? I'm sure they'd all welcome it 😂

                    Re: Mandatory Digital ID Cards

Im not sure im seeing any great cost (in terms of a loss of freedom) in this tbh. I think making the leap from digital id card to they are watching everything i do is a bit insane.

Also not entirely sure how labour think this will solve illegal working but imagine it will probably make following leads/raids easier/quicker.

Yeah I think people can overeact to it. It is far less of an issue than a cashless society for example, in terms of "tracking", and I do broadly trust this government. I do think it's regressive though.

More than anything I just think it's a phenomenal waste of time and money. If someone is employing someone illegally now, they still will.

                            Re: Mandatory Digital ID Cards

I am against the idea too.

I accept that government and private corporations (and others from scammers to bot factories) already hold a lot of digital information on me - some of which I agreed to share. A lot I didn’t (even in the Ts & Cs small print).

But I haven’t seen a convincing argument that this next step would be safe from misuse or theft, cost effective or proportionate to the added risks it brings.

It would also help if Big Brother didn’t look like Kier Starmer!

                              Re: Mandatory Digital ID Cards

There are mandatory checks that any employer should take to check someone's eligibility to work in this country. That wont change. Some employers choose not to carry out those checks and have people working off the books, and usually for cash in hand. I doubt mandatory ID cards will change that and there'll still be a black economy.
Im not wholly against the idea of ID cards, but doubt they'll do what Starmer wants them to do.
