People in Sunderland have had a bad deal and they have been fed bullshit. It's a pity they have chosen to accept it.

Common sense glaringly tells them capitalism will never work for them so why vote Reform?

I don't think he will go. The results, poor as they were, were not as awful as they might have been. Reform and Greens had great nights but not at the upper end of what could have happened.

I think he will now be in last chance saloon and it emphasises what I said earlier for me, in that Labour now absolutely have to deliver.

Sunderland is hardly an example of political shrewdness.

You know yourself it easy to fool anyone with the spectre of the scapegoat. It's worked for time immemorial and in more than competent hands it works every time.

They have just voted for a party who have actively absorbed two of the people (braverman and jenrick) most responsible for high immigration in the early 2020s whilst voting out the party who have brought net migration down massively.

Its very hard to argue that there is any signal to draw from that, other than that a sizeable chunk of the British public are dumb and gullible.

I've been pretty convinced that if labour actually managed to crack the boat crossings they would win the next election but I am starting to think Farage would just pivot to something else and the lemmings would start their march towards that cliff instead.

Absolutely correct and it's already happened. I believe if immigration was reduced to zero and Labour implemented every single policy it wanted a massive chunk of the country would still not vote for the party.

Nowadays I think most people (wrongly in my opinion) do not think of themselves in class terms and do not see the tension between bosses and workers. That was the raison detre of the Labour party. Most people see status as being more fluid and often accept unhealthy discrepancies in wealth and power. That being the case I think Labour's position is existential. No matter what they do they will always be hated by a large swathe of the country who now consider themselves as being "comfortable" and don't identify as "workers" but inevitably want more at other people's expense.

I wonder if, things being as bad as ever, Labour should now look to reinvent themselves and cohere around a new constituency and concept and maybe title themselves as "The Progressives" with a view to create a large left leaning base maybe with the Greens, some Independents and some Lib Dems. The real battle will be between "Brexity" views and "Egalitarian" views and I think there is no time to lose for Labour to get back into the fight.
