  • Electric and Gas Bills

Just spoken to my friend who left the UK for Sweden. His electric and gas bill this month..£11.50, mine next month is around £160 and could increase even further in September.

We are such mugs in the UK but we get what we vote for.

    Re: Electric and Gas Bills

Not to question your friend, but this report from 2019 has the UK mid-ranking in europe and Sweden as the second most expensive, for electricity at least.

I think some countries have done better compensation schemes in recent months and gas bills may be radically different to gas bills in the UK, but it seems unlikely.

      Re: Electric and Gas Bills

      edit:

This from 2021 does have the UK (and others) as significantly more expensive for electricity than Sweden.

Residential and business electricity rates in 150 countries around the world. Several data points for low, medium and high consumption. Final retail prices with all taxes and fees included. Updated quarterly since 2019 to present.

But this has gas prices in Sweden as far higher..

September 2025 price update: The world average price is USD 0.086 per kWh for household users and USD 0.079 per kWh for business users. Prices in the U.S. are about USD 0.05 per kWh for households and businesses. Elsewhere, Algeria, Egypt, Russia, and several other countries with abundant domestic energy resources and heavy subsidies have very low residential prices of less than USD 0.01 per kWh. The most expensive country this quarter is Sweden with 0.233 USD per kWh followed by Brazil (0.207). Having Brazil so high in the rankings is quite interesting, given that incomes there are lower than in many other countries with similar natural gas prices. The cheapest country in the European Union is Slovakia with 0.065 USD per kWh followed by Greece (0.085). There is actually quite a bit of price difference within the EU as many countries have natural gas prices double that in the cheapest countries. Similar patterns hold for business rates which has a direct impact on business competitiveness. The latest business and household natural gas data from March 2026 are available for download.

“It is absolutely clear that a rejection of Russian oil would lead to catastrophic consequences for the global market,” Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Monday in an address on state television.

“The surge in prices would be unpredictable. It would be $300 per barrel if not more.”

You saying we voted for price increases and this is nothing to do with an upside down world and its markets reaction , surely its not all the fault of the UK Government?

No, it's certainly nor all of the fault of the UK Government, I admit that as someone who has no time whatsoever for Johnson or his party. By the same token, will those who make a point of blaming Labour for the 2008 World financial crisis admit that there were other factors at play which had an awful lot to do with what happened? The Conservative party of the time appeared to think that, because they backed the bulk of the measures Labour took in the months that followed.
