Cardiff City have been linked with a move for a striker and a defender, both of whom ply their trade in Belgium.

The Bluebirds are credited with an interest in SK Beveren forward Goduine Koyalipou, who scored 17 goals in 32 games for the second tier side in Belgium last year, winning the league's Golden Boot award.

According to HITC, Cardiff, Sunderland and League One Birmingham City all want to sign the Central African Republic international, who represented France at youth level. The 24-year-old has two years left on his deal at Beveren.

Meanwhile, Football Insider have linked the Bluebirds with a move for Cyprus international centre-back Stelios Andreou.

Like Koyalipou, the defender also plays in Belgium, in the top flight with Charleroi. The 22-year-old centre-back broke through in Cyrpus with Olympiakos Nicosia before moving in 2021 to Charleroi, for whom he has grown to be one of the standout defenders.

The report also adds that Stoke City and West Brom are interested in the defender, who is said to be available for £1.25m.

Erol Bulut this week revealed he wants to add another centre-back to his ranks, however, stating: "This season we start from the front and go back not from the back to front [with transfer planning].

"The urgency was the offensive part. Now in defence I think we look quite good, but we still only have three centre backs. I will try to add one more centre back to the team so we don’t get problems in the season. Injuries happen so there could be one additional centre-back."

It is understood that a central midfielder is viewed as a priority position for Cardiff and hope to complete at least one more signing before the season opener against Sunderland next week.

But also a player we could get a sizeable transfer fee for that could than be reinvested in a player or players to improve other areas of the squad such as a creative midfielder

Isn't it a blindingly obvious one? Colwill was unlikely to get much (if any) game time here this season, so a move to League Two seems about right.

Highly-rated Cardiff City youngster leaves on loan as Erol Bulut reveals transfer strategy
The Wales youth international will head on a season long loan move to the League Two club.

Promising Cardiff City youngster Joel Colwill will head on loan to Cheltenham Town for the 2024/25 campaign.

The 19-year-old central midfielder has huge backers within the club and many are tipping him to play alongside his older brother Rubin in the middle of the pitch for years to come for the Bluebirds.

However, Cardiff are stacked in the middle of the park and it would have proved tricky for Colwill to muscle his way into the reckoning, with Manolis Siopis, Joe Ralls, Andy Rinomhota and Eli King more senior options in that position.

King himself has enjoyed loan spells away are Crewe, Morecambe and Ross County in recent years and has come back a far better player for those experiences. Cardiff hope Colwill Jr will benefit similarly.

Colwill, an all-action midfielder, made his senior debut against Colchester United in the Carabao Cup almost exactly a year ago and also turned out in the defeat at Blackburn in September. He added an FA Cup appearance to his name at Sheffield Wednesday in January and played the last two Championship games of the season.

Cardiff have made four signings this summer but only one contracted player — another central midfielder in Ebou Adams, who went to Derby County — has left the club.

Ryan Wintle has been told he is free to leave, while a question mark remains over Mahlon Romeo, too. There are a number of youngsters hoping to burst on to the scene and make an impact this season, too, but the likelihood is a number of them will join Colwill and head out on loan.

"For sure, young players will go for a loan," Bulut said this week. "We saw last season Isaak (Davies) went for a loan and had a great season and now he is back he delivers good football for us.

"Some young players will go for loans because we want them back in a good shape. A few players will be out but that is the normal way in football."

Speaking about Davies, following his loan stint in Belgium where he scored 12 goals in 36 games, Bulut believes the 22-year-old striker can have an important role this year, offering something no one else does. Sign up to our Cardiff City newsletter here.

Asked if he had been impressed with the returning Davies this summer, Bulut said: "For sure. With his speed first of all – sometimes we have to control him not to sprint so much.

"But he did well in the games, he will be important for us sometimes in games where we stay deep to use him in behind. How he scored that goal against Hertha."

Cardiff have leant heavily on the loan market in recent seasons, but we are told their preference is to add permanent signings. Another central midfielder in Alex Robertson of Manchester City is a target and City's preference is to take him on a permanent deal, too.

City have used just one loan slot in the form of Wilfried Kanga and Bulut said they are changing the strategy this summer, wanting only one more loan addition this summer.

When asked if they were looking to bring in any more temporary signings, Bulut added: "I cannot say yes or no, but we try to get players in where it feels like home.

"Everybody has to feel 'I am here at home'. Loans you need also, you cannot manage it because other clubs are involved. This season we have only one loan. We don't want to take many loans. There could be one more but I think not more."
