  • Southgate gone

Gareth Southgate has stepped down from his role as manager of the England men’s side.
Southgate’s decision comes following England’s European Championship final defeat by Spain on Sunday.
After that game, Southgate refused to be drawn on his future with his contract due to expire in December.
“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” Southgate said in a statement via the FA on Tuesday.
“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.
“I have had the privilege of leading a large group of players in 102 games. Every one of them has been proud to wear the three lions on their shirts, and they have been a credit to their country in so many ways.
“The squad we took to Germany is full of exciting young talent and they can win the trophy we all dream of. I am so proud of them, and I hope we get behind the players and the team at St. George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football, and understand the power football has to drive positive change.
“I look forward to watching and celebrating as the players go on to create more special memories and to connect and inspire the nation as we know they can

In fairness to him, he’s taken them further than they’ve been for 50 odd years, just couldn’t quite get them over the line. They have a lot of young talent and experience at the moment so if the FA get the next appointment right, it could be the missing piece within the jigsaw puzzle and they might actually go on and win something.

      Pretty much sums it up.

England always seem to be lacking that 'extra dimension' that sets them apart from winners.

Has he got them there or was it inevitable with that level of squad and that run of fixtures? And they still almost went out earlier. It's like Page getting to the WC if you ask me. They've got there with him rather than because of him.

On a good note I felt strangely comfortable in the leadup to the final which was nice

In my opinion, He goes down as the most overrated manager in history. Whenever they played a good side, they lost.

In the Southgate era, England played a team in the top ten 27 times, and won 6. That is shocking. One of those 6 wins was against Wales.

He's had an easy run to the semis or final every tournament, which although is out of his control, still cannot be disputed. His only notable win was against a very poor German side at Wembley in 2020.

His teams play the worst football out of any top team. A good manager would get that crop of players pressing as they do for their clubs, and playing proper football.

Page didn't know when to leave though, Southgate did, so respect to him for reading the room correctly.

I agree. And he comes across as a lovely guy, I just don't rate him.

Here's one - If you had the option (and I guess to make this one work you need to think of him as being a different nationality?), would you want him in charge of Wales, or City?

I would have thought Russell Slade will be on their list if possible candidates, he could take them to the next level

He’s intelligent enough to realise that he couldn’t take England any further and so had to go if they were to win a trophy. The funny thing is that Southgate’s 2018 team was a lot more attacking in its outlook than his 2024 one despite the latter appearing to have more attacking talent - it was as if he lacked the confidence to let his later teams off the leash.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see his reputation restored somewhat in years to come, but this seems like the right time for him to go.

                    England had an easy draw

                    Even then they struggled

I mean avoiding Germany , Netherlands , Portugal , Italy etc they had the luck of der oirish ! ☘

Their one true test .......goodnight , go home

That being said Southgate is a decent man and no manager will make a good side a world beater

If this comment is true, it's no wonder that almost every non-Englishman is against them.
