Cardiff boss Erol Bulut hailed Rubin Colwill as a great player but said the 22-year-old Wales international could be “much, much better” with some changes to his game.

Colwill helped his side to a 2-0 Carabao Cup first-round win over League One Bristol Rovers after slotting home a late second to add to Mark McGuinness’ 68th-minute opener.

Bulut said of the midfielder: “Rubin is a player who when you put him on for 20 minutes he tries to cram in 90 minutes. This he has to manage much better.

“He tried to chip the ball over the goalkeeper and those are the chances you have to take. It’s too relaxed and we have to score from these kinds of positions.

“He scored in the end and I’m happy he feels better. He is a great player and he can be much, much better if he changes a few things.”

Rovers boss Matt Taylor said he was heading home “disappointed” at not getting more out of the game against their Championship hosts.

“It wasn’t quite enough. I said to the players before the game let’s not just get the plaudits for putting in the effort, let’s get something out of the game,” he said.

“I thought we had the best opportunities in the first half. When an opposing team makes 11 changes, whoever they are, you feel you’ve got a bigger chance than previously.

“Up until the hour mark we were well in the game. I was a little bit disappointed and we’ve got to find a way of hurting the opposition.

“We’ve got to find a way to hold on to the ball more, create more.”

Bulut should accept he didn't play him in the right role, he's being mismanaged, IMO.

        Bulut is right.
What I find with Colwill is it's like he feels the need to do something 'special' every time he receives the ball. He needs to keep it more simple, a lot of what he tries doesn't come off and he gifts the ball to the opposition.
I think Colwill would also do well to stay behind after training and practice his shooting from outside the box. If he could just improve on this aspect of his game he might get 4-5 extra goals a season.

Isn't that what makes him exciting to a point? I get what you say but to what extent does he need to keep things simple and how much of the trying to do something special does he need to lose? One criticism that is, perhaps unfairly, directed at Bulut is coaching flair out of players. How much flair do we want from Colwill and how much do we want him to keep things simple?

He runs with the ball for too long, down blind alleys, and loses the ball too often. Belllamy recently said he hates watching old clips of himself as he felt he held on to it too much, he thinks the game has moved on and it's all about letting the ball do the work with quick passes and movement.

He did try his hardest yesterday but Bulut is right and can see he's holding on to it for slightly too long. I can understand why yesterday it was a young team and maybe he felt the responsibility to make something happen.

Colwill needs a season in League One playing in his correct position. It’s not going to work out for him here under Bulut.

He was excellent for the last 20 minutes last night playing in the number 10 role, why not give him a chance to play there instead of bringing him on as a sub out wide all the time.

I don’t get Bulut’s criticism of him trying to lift the ball over the keeper either, it was close in and he tried something inventive, if he had kept it low the keeper would have blocked it.

We have plenty of workhorses in our team. We need some inventive and creativity

We "kept things simple" for ninety minutes on Saturday and an hour last night for all of the good it did us. I've been saying myself in pre season that Colwill has been trying too hard to do something out of the ordinary every time he gets the ball, but, by the same token, someone has to take some responsibility and play a pass with a degree of risk and reward to it. Hopefully, we've got a few more players who will b e able to open up a defence this season, but Colwill will remain one of the best at the club at coming up with something a bit different and if he thinks something is on in the first or the ninetieth minute, he should be encouraged to go for it.

This isn't a subject where someone is wholly wrong or wholly right. Bulut was right to be critical of Colwill's attempt to chip the keeper last night (Colwill himself admitted it was a mistake), but I don't get why he started Colwill out on the left when Conte can play on both sides - if Colwill has ro play out wide, he seems to be more effective on the right.

I don't agree with the first part, he's played in almost 100 championship games now. I think he's good enough to start for us every week - if played in his correct position, not chucked on for the last 10 minutes as a winger.

I don't think that Bulut is going to have the balls to do that though

                      That's the point.

Colwill needs to be playing football regularly. Bulut is highly unlikely to play him regularly, and when he does play him it's not likely to be for 90 minutes or in his best position.

Colwill is 22 now. His career is going to go to waste unless he starts playing 90 minutes of football on a regular basis and that's not going to happen here while this fella is in charge.

Colwill played very well after 60 minutes yesterday. The pivotal point being that he played right across the line with some freedom. There were some factors involved though that helped the whole team in the change of play. Bristol Rovers had to open up after they conceded the goal and they looked very tired because for all of our unproductive work we were stretching them during the first half which tired them and it showed, and I don't know how many of those players played on Saturday.

Space opened up and Colwill had the opportunity to turn with the ball in Midfield which went on to create the set piece that produced the goal. Before that, and with Rovers not budging, not one of our players attempted to take a player on, take risks, turn the opposition, it started when the space opened up and Rovers started to look tired.

Colwill did well, produced some fine moments in possession, worked the space well, showed for the ball. The concern for me was our inability to break Rovers down, who looked a very poor outfit, while they sat in and kept shape.

Bulut is using Colwill as his own scapegoat

We all know Colwill could be very good. We all know his faults.

The Colwill conversation has been done to death and there was no real need for Bulut to say this when there are some others in the same category.

                          Deflects off his own mismanagement.

Do you not think he probably got asked about Colwill and this was his reply? I doubt he went in there and just started talking randomly about Colwill's faults and strengths

He needs to start every game at number 10. He’s way too good for league one. Ask any Bristol Rovers fan, on their match thread they think he’s too good for us!
