Anwar El Ghazi says he has received a payout from Mainz after a German court found he was unfairly dismissed by the club over a social media post about the Israel-Gaza war.

The German club owed the 29-year-old the money in salary and bonuses that they would have had to pay in full by midnight July 30 in order to retain his services.

The footballer has said he has now received a payment of €1.5million (£1.27m, $1.68m) from Mainz relating to his dismissal. El Ghazi is still owed a further €200k in bonuses from Mainz.

The Athletic have approached Mainz for comment.

El Ghazi completed a transfer to Cardiff City last month as a free agent, following a German court ruling earlier in July that he was unfairly dismissed by Mainz.

On Friday, the twice-capped Netherlands international said he had received the money and would be making a €500k donation to children in Gaza.

“After receiving a substantial payment today from Mainz, I would like to make clear that my legal battle with Mainz has never, for me, been about the money,” El Ghazi said in a statement.

“I would like to take this moment to thanks Mainz for two things.

“Firstly, for the substantial pay off, 500k of which will be used to help fund projects for the children in Gaza. I hope Mainz, despite their repeated failed attempts to avoid making the due payment, take solace from the knowledge that they have, through me, contributed financially in trying to make life a little more bearable for the children of Gaza.

“Secondly, in attempting to silence me, making my voice even louder for the oppressed and voiceless in Gaza.”

Was a top player - hopefully will be again. Still is a top man!

It is not advisable for any professional player to make social media remarks about the Gaza conflict. He made the "from the river to the sea" comment in the post which is accepted as an antisemitic remark. The post was also made on 3rd of November 2023 which is only a month after the appalling attacks by Hamas on a pop festival in Israel.
He was clearly guilty of being partially responsible for what happened, and I don't understand why Mainz didn't point this out. I also note that he has donated $500k to a children's charity in Gaza. I hope that is where the money ends up but there is a history of such charities of being money raising vehicles for Hamas

it’s accepted by some groups, not all. More importantly not the German courts.

It’s a great gesture to give the charity, regardless of where you think it potentially could end up.

In most of the world it is accepted as a call for peace and justice!

The post was also made on 3rd of November 2023 which is only a month after the appalling attacks by Hamas on a pop festival in Israel. It was made 3 weeks after Israel started bombing Gazan civilians and a week after the IDF/IOF invasion began. The death toll (mainly women and children) was already close to 10,000 when he made the post.

He was clearly guilty of being partially responsible for what happened, and I don't understand why Mainz didn't point this out. Absolute nonsense .

I hope that is where the money ends up but there is a history of such charities of being money raising vehicles for Hamas You have no idea which Children's charity he is supporting, but most operate independently of whatever remains of Gazan civil society although in very difficult circumstances. Your claim about Hamas skimming charitable donations is a frequent and unevidenced Israeli attack line - and one that is part of a co-ordinated attempt to undermine international aid organisations in Gaza. More to the point the people trying to provide aid and support to kids in Gaza have been regular targets of Israeli bombs and missiles!

It's not just a Netanyahu echo, so parroting the "From the River..." line was, at best, naive. However, El-Ghazi has said he stands by what he said. Yes, it's a hefty and generous donation but one should be wary that it might not all go to the right places. I wouldn't trust Hamas to hold my coat.

Four opinions stated as if they are facts in two paragraphs, that’s some going.

A genocidal call of violence to eliminate the state of Israel? Not quite as "peaceful" a process as you suggest.

There is a long history to the phrase - which has also been used by Netanyahu and the Israeli right to describe the ethnically cleansed Greater Israel that they want to see.

It has been used for 60 years or more. For the vast majority of people who chant 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free' it is a call to end ethnic cleansing, apartheid, colonial oppression, occupation and systematic discrimination.

Some use the phrase to describe a future state of Israel/Palestine that is democratic with equal rights (that would mean the transformation of the ethno-religious state that exists now), but I have never heard it used as 'a genocidal call for violence' in any of the many demonstrations I have been part of in the past few years - especially since October 2023.

There have been tens of thousands of Jewish people on the Palestine/Gaza demonstrations across the UK (not just the big London ones) and also in the US and many other parts of the world. They also chant 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free'. Like the rest of the solidarity movement with the victims in Gaza and the West Bank, they have decided to claim the chant and ensure its 'peace and justice' meaning is not distorted by other voices.

Jewish speakers (there have always been Jewish speakers) on the end of march platforms in London also usually finish their speeches with 'From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free'.
