For those who speak some German, it may be of interest the use of the word 'bist' can be heard (and in the same context as in German) in the Bristol area amongs the rural oldies, I understand.
Ah, must be just a Bristolian thing.

The 'duzen' form of German used in Bristol, eh!
Languages and local dialects can be fascinating.

It’s a Forest (of Dean) greeting, although “Varest” is dying out by generation. Ow bist o’ butt.

‘Azards o' Chimuck Szwippin and Other Poems is worth a read.

I do quite often too, I would imagine more people are OK with it than strongly object to it, but it's good to know I suppose.

What’s happened to initial greetings? Always used to be ‘Hiya’ or in Cardiff ‘Aw rye’ ( our version of Alright). ‘Hey’ seems to be creeping in, years ago if someone greeted you with a ‘Hey’, the reply was normally, ‘That’s what ‘orses eat’.

'Ayup', 'Al Reet' and 'Nah then' still going strong around me.

But another generation or two and they will be gone.

How about if a smart young bird in a bar said do you wanna mate mate?

I thought about this post in the week …. A young lad has applied for a job at my company . In a very short message agreeing to come in for an interview he called me mate twice …. He will have to be something special to get the start , or even leave the office alive 😂😂

Offer him a drink at the interview, if he says ‘Can I GET a coffee’, stick the heed on him and fling down the stairs. :hehe:
