I have never heard it in my years living in Taunton, Chard and Bridgwater and various village in this vicinity. In fact, I have never heard it in conversation anywhere. It may therefore be Bristolian or from that neck of the woods.

For those who speak some German, it may be of interest the use of the word 'bist' can be heard (and in the same context as in German) in the Bristol area amongs the rural oldies, I understand.

Ah, must be just a Bristolian thing.

The 'duzen' form of German used in Bristol, eh!

It’s a Forest (of Dean) greeting, although “Varest” is dying out by generation. Ow bist o’ butt.

I do quite often too, I would imagine more people are OK with it than strongly object to it, but it's good to know I suppose.

What’s happened to initial greetings? Always used to be ‘Hiya’ or in Cardiff ‘Aw rye’ ( our version of Alright). ‘Hey’ seems to be creeping in, years ago if someone greeted you with a ‘Hey’, the reply was normally, ‘That’s what ‘orses eat’.

Just gone up in my opinion after he had a bit of a rant on Radio 5 about people who call any male they talk to "mate" - can't explain why and I suppose it says more about me than the person calling me his mate, but it's always made my hackles rise.

How about if a smart young bird in a bar said do you wanna mate mate?

I thought about this post in the week …. A young lad has applied for a job at my company . In a very short message agreeing to come in for an interview he called me mate twice …. He will have to be something special to get the start , or even leave the office alive 😂😂
