Dad’s Army was so good because the humour was directed at us as much as the Germans and it still succeeds today (unlike some aspects of Fawlty Towers). If you think anything Ive said in this thread is advocating that all comedy should be banned, then you’re even further past saving than I thought you were.

I think the humour in Fawlty Towers was 100% directed at Basil and his ridiculous behaviour. Brilliant, clever programme.

It was amusing then and still can be today for many. Though maybe people back then off the back of real hardship were generally just less offended all the time. Good on them.

To be fair I really doubt Tuchel gives a ****. It's clearly a joke.

There are plenty of things that are amusing that one shouldn't really say publicly. I don't many will actually be offended by HR's "joke". It's just in poor taste. It doesn't affect me in the slightest. It just makes Harry look like a plank.

More to the point, I just don't see why some think laughing at the Germans is relevant any more. A few years ago Japan beat Ireland in the rugby world cup and my next door neighbour was furious. His wife thought such an upset was great but he wasn't amused, citing how the Japs were bastards during the war. He's now about 60 so never lived through it. Very strange attitude to have.

Do we still take the piss out of the South Africans over the Boer war? I suspect attitudes to the war are different for England though.

I’ve read / heard some German ex players get tar more upset about the tact Tuchel is managing the England team.
