Very interesting interview with BBM in the second half of the Rob abd Blakey podcast this week with a fascinating discussion presenting another side to the debate about Salech being fouled all of the time.

    Re: Salech .

Thanks for highlighting this, that really was an interesting discussion about Salech. What Blake in particular was saying ties in exactly with what I've been seeing. Tuerto's been saying this for months - more often than not, it's Salech who instigates the contact with defenders. He seems to believe his job is to engage in a physical battle with the opposition for 90 minutes and he does himself no favours at all. The good thing is he's young enough to learn, so hopefully he can change the way he approaches games.

Interviews like this with BBM are such a breath of fresh air. He comes across as a really likeable character and what he says almost always makes a lot of sense. It's such a contrast to the interviews we got from the likes of Morison, Bulut and Riza.

Thanks. Really enjoyed that. Few observations:
      1. I am really warming to BBM. I hope he can be part of the club for a significant period of time.
      2. Loved his short to the point observations on Rubin. “Love him. One of the best I’ve worked with”. Hallelujah!
      3. Blakey’s great!!

100% agree about Salech , loses his effectiveness trying to be a wrestler at times.

The interview was brilliant with BBM , such honesty and sense. I doubt I have heard a better football interview.

The rest of the podcast was excellent as well , if you haven't got just over an hour BBM starts at 40mins .

I was only going to tune in for a few minutes , been here for almost the whole thing

        Great recommendation.

Very interesting inverview - it's great he's come and is trying to raise the players to be better, even the senior pros.

I'm sure Blake is correct in what he is saying about Salech improving if he stops looking for contact as much, or times it better, but I also think there have been a number of occasions where he can feel pretty hard done by by the referee including one perfectly good goal vs Burton I think.

Undoubtedly there have been times when he's been hard done by, but many City fans seem to be very one-eyed where Salech's concerned. He's very often the one who initiates the contact in the first place and he commits a lot of fouls himself, many of which go unpunished. As I've mentioned in another thread, pulling at opponents' shorts seems to be a favourite (and strange) trick of his. He's also not afraid to use his elbows. He's been fortunate not to have been sent off on a couple of occasions.

Another thing that goes against him is he grizzles to referees almost constantly - something I'm sure they don't appreciate. He really doesn't do himself any favours.

I think he would be a lot more effective if he was a bit more clever in the way he approaches the game. He seems a bright enough lad, so hopefully the penny will drop eventually.

Yeah there's definitely room for improvement in his game - but even with his current flaws he's our top scorer, and has generated the most xG out of anyone in the division.

I would like to quote Martin O'Neill on this one:

Reflecting on the grip data analytics exerts over football he is scathing of discussion around expected goals. For O’Neill this metric “is total nonsense. You’ve got to remember what the game is about: winning football matches, and that means scoring goals, not recording the expectation of them. ‘Expected goals’ have only come about in the last few years. It’s a clueless development. Some people just use these words to try to sound clever.”

Wouldn't the high XG be in line with most observers believe there is more to come from him, and rolling about the ground with defenders isn't the best use of his talents?

                  Marin O'Neil is a dinosaur .

Don't ask me. XG is a load of bollocks as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, high xG would suggest he's getting enough good chances to score regularly at this level - at a slightly higher rate than he has been.
If he can make the improvements to his game that were being discussed in the podcast possibly even more.

Some of the others in the league who have scored more, have done so from a much lower xG - that's almost always not sustainable over a longer period, so you'd expect the goals to dry up for some of them.

each to their own - whilst it's often misused/misunderstood in much of the discourse around it - it is here to stay because it works.

So do long throws, apparently. They're here to stay. Again.

I'd love to hear how XG 'works', but maybe we can move that to another thread.

That's a great find, thank you Bob.
The more I hear BBM speak, the more respect I have for the man. The discussion about Salech was really interesting and explained a lot to me about why he isn't getting free-kicks and how he can improve.
