  • New Offside Rule

FIFA president Gianni Infantino and IFAB have opened the door to Arsène Wenger’s proposed offside rule.

A player will ONLY be offside if he has FULLY passed the last defender, so it won't be decided based on a body part anymore.

If approved, implementation could begin in the 2026–2027 season.

Yes, although it will just move the point of contention. But anything that leads to less goals chalked off by the width of an armpit hair is good.

No, lesser sides will defend from 6 yards out.

Here's one. Let the referee decide what he or she thinks a players body is in a position where there's a big enough advantage that's detrimental to the defending team, or just let them make mistakes and everyone just get on with it and stop the constant crying over officials.

Just use the position of the feet.
If there is a gap between the back foot of the attacker, and the front foot of the defender, then its offside. If there's any overlap, its not.

The irony here being, VAR gets the offside decisions spot on. It’s the rest of the guff and the time it takes that’s problematic

Can you imagine the low block will turn into a total goal block.

Small, rapid strikers will be back in demand.

Thing is, there's no solution, there's always going to be unhappy people whatever the laws of the game say. Fifa otr whoever it is behind this proposal are obviously attempting tp reward attack minded football. which means the best teams are rewarded, those with the most money, biggest budget etc, make of that what you will.

My biggest gripe is the incessant baby like whinging that fans and pundits alike dish out on a daily basis, we see enough of it on here on a match day. Yes the officials make mistakes, but so do the players, yet there's a culture of crying over the referee that doesn't sit well with me, excuses, and i don't like that, it's a sign of weakness in my opinion.

So, the old adage that there's enough football minutes over a season for mistakes from officials to level out. If a team gets relegated on the last day of a season due to a poor call from the referee, then tough luck, they shouldn't have got themselves in the position in the first place.

I don't know, there's an art to defending and using offside. I don't think you can really play one properly with this.

Outside of var leagues also I just think there will be more errors with this. You would only flag if it was obvious someone was offside.

Would probably have the effect as said above of teams just dropping deeper and in all likelihood actually less space for forwards to get onto.

                          Scrap offside altogether.

It will still end up with lines being drawn

There is a bias, though, in the Premier League. Liverpool and the like get much more of the fifty-fifty; the odds are stacked against the teams coming up. But it is what it is, you'll never change it.
