I don't know how accurate that is, although I wouldn't be surprised if the bigger clubs get more calls going their way due to the disproportionate amount of chances they create against the weaker clubs. Essentially what you and others are saying is that officials can be intimidated and have some kind of unconscious bias going on. Could be truth in it, although how it affects things over a season doesn't really change much if that is the case.

I have long been an advocate of that.
No offside no offside trap just have to defend properly.
Cuts out a massive contention in the game and saves a load of time being wasted.
The way football is now a goal hanger would be pointless jesus we don't even leave someone on the half way line defending a corner.

I don’t really buy the theory that the bigger sides get the marginal decisions, having reffed at a decent level for over 20 years, decisions are made in split seconds,I don’t see the ref subconsciously or otherwise thinking it’s Liverpool or Man City, got to go with them.

I don’t think you’re ever going to eradicate controversy over offside but this new proposal seems a sensible step forward for me.

It would be interesting to see what the game would look like without offside. No doubt it would be far more open. Worth trialling in the lower leagues I reckon.

To be honest though, all of this debate has come around because of VAR, which has highlighted how daft offside has become. VAR is without a doubt the worst thing that's happened to the sport itself during my time as a fan. It's just nonsense. Just let the referees and linesmen do their jobs, and if they occasionally get decisions wrong then so be it.

The forensic analysis of simple incidents and the constant scrutiny of the match officials is killing the game.

            100%.

Knock it on the head until the technology can make a decision automatically in a split second. Which probably isn't many years away anyway.

Some interesting ideas that were on a Facebook group…

German referee Patrick Ittrich has suggested making several changes to football's rules.

              1) For a tactical foul in midfield, a free-kick should be awarded 17 metres from goal. How often will we see such fouls then?

              2) If the player rolls on the floor three times and needs a doctor, get him one and make him wait on the sideline for 3 minutes. How quickly do you think the player would stand up?

              3) If a player insults the referee, send them off for 10 minutes to calm down. Go cycling to warm up before coming back on. We can learn from handball in that respect.

              4) How is a referee surrounded by 10 men after a decision? In my opinion, boom, boom, boom - three red cards. Play seven against ten now. That'd be fine by me.

There was a trial of no offside in The Watney's Cup in the 60s, 1967 I think. I cant remember the official report following that, someone may remember but it obviously wasn't favourable as we still have off side!

Rock, paper, scissors is clearly the way forward.

                      Will it resolve anything?

Won't the arguments continue and the stupid VAR lines just be drawn to prove the attackers heel (for example) was or wasn't fully past the defender when the ball was played.

Same problems but a just a different position as far as I can see.

Yes. The point of offside is wholly to prevent goal hanging. If someone is an nch ahead of someone else it makes not a jot of difference. You simply don't need that level of scrutiny and let's not forget, this is entertainment.

I cannot think of a single benefit of the stricter, technology backed interpretations of offside. It's made the game demonstrably worse for me

Entertainment but also a billion dollar industry.

at free kicks etc the defensive player can be in front of the attacking player and they just need to extend their arm towards the goal and hey ho the attacker is now offside.

there is some merit in all of this...

The 8 sec rule is being enforced, which is good.
They're wasting time taking throw ins now.
