Without looking it up, how many of our players do you think there are in the top forty of Whoscored.com’s League One ratings?

      Re: Who scored.com

from memory I think their ratings tend to favour highly players winning a lot of individual duels, so there will probably be a lot of burly centre backs from teams that do a lot of defending on there.
Salech is probably up there, and I'd guess 3 or 4 others, but I'd guess we do a lot more rotation than most teams so that may have an impact if some players are under the cut-off

I'll go with four players. Trott, Salech, Wintle, Colwill R.

I have no idea how they arrive at their ratings or what they mean, but can I be the first to say it’s a conspiracy.

Depends on how many players we have in it. Less than 4 then it's the work of the Dark Forces (stolen from Mozzer)

The answer is 2. Salech is at 18 and Rubin Colwill 20. Sorry to disappoint some on here, but I won”t be yelling conspiracy about this, more that having such a low representation from any team which has led any league for as much as we have done this season must tend to invalidate their matkings to an extent. The top six has two Stockport players in it and there two each from Stevenage and Reading in the top ten. I assume the markings are done by individual fans of every club involved, so you are going to get discrepancies in markings, but it’s working in a way which does the site no favours here.

I can relate to this to some extent because I was the City representative on the Football Manager series for a few years around a decade ago and from what I can gather, I was more than twice the age of most of the other club representatives. Now, they may have been “buttering me up”, but when I packed it in, I was told I was much less of a problem than most other representatives because my markings tended to be more realistic than others who tended to over mark their club and players - seems to me something similar is happening with Whoscored.com.

Another reason for the lack of City representation in the top forty could be BBM’s rotation policy. Rotating central defenders is very unusual and, from memory, players in that position in particular need to be featuring every week to maintain their position near the top - but, to counter that, Rubin has missed half of the season now and yet is still in the top twenty.

Birmingham, who romped the league with 111 points last year, similarly had only two players in the top 40 so there may not be a lot of incredible science at play here.

Actually no, the markings are automatically generated by the OPTA stats - which is an almost impossible task to try to do over a range of different teams with different playing styles and strategies.

For example pass completion percentage is a lot more important in a team trying to keep the ball than in a team hitting it long every time they have the ball - but they are both perfectly valid strategies.

Or a striker in a team that dominates games having 4 shots at goal is not the same as a striker in a team that have 30% possession having 4 shots.

Some of the stats people try to work out a means of adjusting for posession, amongst other things - but it is impossible to capture everything.

The players that tend to do well in these measures are ones that "do a lot of things", winning one on ones, making a lot of key passes, shots etc

In that case, if you look at this season’s League One individual stats then my faith in OPTA and the like has been shaken a lot - especially when you consider that last season’s ratings seem to be more weird than they are this time around.

I looked yesterday, there are only 5 in the top 100.

Isn't this one like almost all football stats websites - basically a load of old bollocks?

There are definitely interesting things you can do with data, but this level of generalisation is always going to be too challenging using the fairly basic level of data that is available for this level of football.

Looking at the highest rated players, it seems to me that they might be a little too skewed in favour of players who win aerial duels.

11 of the top 20 are centre backs, the only 2 strikers are Salech and Kyle Wooton who both win a lot of headers.

There are a few non-headerers near the top, like Lewis Wing and Ollie Norwood - but I think they tend to be focal players for their teams and almost everything goes through them (to some extent see also Rubin Colwill before the injury)

Wing and Norwood both score very highly on the EFL fantasy league app. Wing especially.
                              8 goals, 7 assists, 32 interceptions, 38 key passes.
