  • Millwall documentary from 1977

I've seen this before, I suspect many of you will have, but happened across this again this afternoon.

Before my time but an extraordinary documentary really of what seems like an almost entirely lost world.

Millwall in the same division of City that year, alongside Spurs.

It's really interesting and worth a watch

An old classic. Harry the Dog and co.

Somethings never change outnumbered etc but the cockney accent has been completely taken over by MLE.

Id love to know what became of the 21 year old with your curly ginger hair.

I know Millwall were one of the worst, but in the late 70s and early 80s would we really see scraps every game at Ninian Park, or is it something you may see a few times a season?

Looking at the Bristol Rovers game, I assume that City v Millwall that season was similar?

I read somewhere that the ginger lad had committed suicide. This was backed up by replies to the comment. Very sad if true.
Think Harry the dog also passed away.

If some some Northern Ponce spits at me…I’ll stick a facking pint glass in his head.

I remember the next day at school. It was all everyone was talking about.

I remember in the '70s and "80s most of the violence was outside. Tottenham in the FA Cup sticks out in my minds. Of course Chelsea in '83 it was all over the ground. Mayhem.

Chelsea at home in 1977. There was a burger van on the corner of the Bob bank and the Grange end. Chelsea tipped the van over on their way onto the Bob bank. Do anyone remember that or is it a figment of my imagination.

At one stage me and a mate were on top of that van.
When I watch the battle scenes in lord of the rings it reminds me of that day
                    Mayhem is an understatement.

                      Not entirely accurate.

I was stood about 10 yards in front of the small group of Chelsea fans, when a verbal confrontation happened between them and some surrounding City fans. Chelsea weren't chanting or singing, they were just stood there, but they stood out because no one recognised any of them.
It soon became obvious who they were and within the space of about 40 seconds it had turned from verbal abuse into a fight.
Chelsea were pushed back to the corner of the Bob Bank where the hotdog stand was.
One or two of them escaped down the walkway by the toilets and around the back of the Grange-End. Others weren't so fortunate and had to climb over the wall (by the hotdog stand) and jump down 15 ft or so to the walkway.
                      Naturally, they were hugely outnumbered.

They certainly looked older in the 70s. Can't believe that one lad was 27, he looked about 40

Don’t think the fashions and hairstyles back then helped! I had some Millwall fans try to steal my scarf which was wrapped tight round my wrist outside our home game that season. I was 14 at the time and they were a few years older . They tugged at the scarf but I wasn’t letting go and there was a very brief scuffle but nothing too serious and they legged it quickly when some other Cardiff fans came over to help

Worst time with Millwall was much later than the 70s and 80s, opening game of the season in the late 90s - maybe 98 or 99, certainly a lot of trouble at Ninian Park that day . Think Treatment had all retired by then :hehe:

I remember watching this although to be fair, if i watched in 1977 when i'd have been 16 or possibly a repeat in later years i'm not sure. Violence with honor :hehe: good memories but glad football has moved on from this, Rovers were better than City back then (on the terraces) as evidenced with their no nonsense approach in dealing with Harry and his mates. Never went to the old Den but did go to Spurs and West ham back then, West ham Lairy as F but felt more fear at Spurs, the coach driver trying to drop us off near the ground didn't help matters resulting in a very windy journey home.

I was 16 at the time of the Spurs game at White Hart Lane. I was studying at the Merchant Navy Sea Training School in Kent. I made my own way to the ground with two other City fans. As you said, a very iffy day.
