  • Greyhound Racing Ban

According to Animal Aid 420 horses per annum are “ raced to death “ and die or are put down. Since 2020 at Cheltenham alone 82 horses have died notwithstanding the many other racecourses and point to point locations when deaths have occurred. There was even an incident on live TV recently where a horse in the winners enclosure dropped dead after a race in front of the cameras. Wind operations to increase the airflow into horses lungs are routinely done nowadays seemingly without regard for the welfare of the horse. All this and yet the numbskulls in the Senedd waste our time and money by trawling through legislation to ban greyhound racing at the one remaining track in Wales where as far as I know no deaths of dogs during a race have occurred. The interviewee on ITV news from the Dogs Trust stating that “ hundreds “ of dogs are killed each year at race tracks needs to provide some evidence.
The Senedd members have gone after what they consider a soft touch. What now are they going to do do about National Hunt racing and shut down Ffos Las , Chepstow and Bangor on Dee?. Don’t hold your breath!

The Senedd members have gone after what constituents and activists, maybe not many, have raised with them. I doubt there's the appetite amongst the general public to ban horse racing but you never know.

Horse racing brings in far larger economic benefits, would be surprised to see any real attempt to stop it.

Hadn't heard of the potential greyhound ban, as you say, seems an easy target.

You have to discount the economic benefits when the safety of horses and jockeys is compromised. No attempt to ban horse racing will be accepted by the powerful vested interests. Greyhound racing was a soft touch. Incidentally it’s not a potential ban but was passed by the Senedd on 17/03/2026 and widely reported in the National and local media. Perhaps you were on holiday!

There are plenty of racecourses you could attend and protest and plenty of protest groups.

Good idea. A bit of luck he will run in front of a galloping horse.

Labour government, if it brings in money and adds to the economy, ban it quickly

The argument to ban greyhound racing concerns the dog’s treatment and welfare, not how many die. Their treatment is inhumane.

Can you explain what you mean, and what evidence you have?

I don't have a dog in this fight, as it were, I have no knowledge about the subject myself and I have no idea of the veracity of the following (as quoted by the RSPCA on Facebook):

"New statistics released by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain reveal there were a total of 346 racing-related deaths and 3,809 injuries due to their participation in greyhound racing in 2024, with the number of trackside deaths also increasing for the second year running.

Since 2017, 4,034 greyhounds have died or been put to sleep because of their involvement with racing, while more than 35,000 have experienced injuries.

These figures show us once again that racing is inherently dangerous for the dogs involved, and we and other members of the Cut the Chase coalition are pleased to hear that the Welsh Government is set to advance the ban on greyhound racing this autumn."

I have no interest in dog racing either, or any knowledge on the safety of the dogs. That’s why i asked those questions.
Well done, you’ve saved stevo some time today.
