  • Carvery recommendations

I'll be taking out my grandson and his girlfriend for a meal next Sunday and personally I favour a carvery.

Are the Toby carveries in Pontprennau and Whitchurch any good ? Just checking on the quality of the food because they can vary a lot. The one I used to go to in Greenford was excellent for instance

Failing that, any other carveries that are recommended ? The quality of food must be excellent.

Some people say Coopers in Ely is nice, but I personally don’t like queuing for food like paupers

Toby carveries and the concept of quality fare are not always the closest of bedfellows.

I have tried the children's meals (the meat was very tender) and the OAP options (the meat being as tough as old boots) but I haven't yet tried the paupers option. Presumably it's well-cleaned before bing cooked.

Toby is absolutely fine for what it is, but at times the queues can be quite long

Nothing says Grandad like a carvery does, don't forget your pipe and slippers

I think you would change your mind if you ate at the one in Greenford. All the meats were cooked to perfection, the veg was fresh not frozen and the gravy was top notch. Just a pity that all of them are probably nowhere near that standard.

listen to all the culinary experts on here. Toby is fine for what it is. If you want top end food try Home, Heaneys or Gorse.

Fair dinkum. The one at Taunton closed a few times due to 'staff problems' and I think there was a touch of the Cape Verde food scenario about it.

Ok so a Toby it is. Pontprennau or Whitchurch, is one better than the other ?

Can you recommend any good carvery restaurants in ... Latvia?

Are you a blue light card holder as they offer great discounts, alternatively there might be some offers for you here

If you’re eating early, I’d recommend going into town to the Queens Vaults.

I had a carvery there when I was back in Cardiff last November. It’s good for the price, and you’re in town if you fancy a drink somewhere else afterwards, and you’ve got options with transport.

The Hollybush Carvery has recently had a makeover and is not a Tobys. It is average. The Pontprennau Toby has a better rep.
