Top restaurant in Cardiff right now is Hiraeth, in my humble opinion.

Nowt wrong with a carvery though.

I know several females who avoid them like the plague. Is it a gender thing or am I simply moving in posh totty circles these days?

Well a carvery isn't a date restaurant. And there are plenty of people who like to say that anything but the best is shit. There is nothing wrong at all with carveries and family restaurants. They aren't trying to be top end. They don't need to be. But if they punch out a solid roast dinner at a decent price, what's not to like.

Thanks but you avoided answering the profound and philosophical question.

Exactly, how is a bloke going to get his leg over after eating enough food to feed a small family for a week?

Females of a certain age get a bit flustered around hot meat.

To be fair you can't knock a carvery, for the price point of your average one you are getting better value than pub food which likely costs more and is worse.

It will be hit and miss depending on who is in the kitchen that day, just avoid the busy times, I can't be dealing with having to queue for it.
