  • Southampton appeal rejected

A League Arbitration Panel has today dismissed Southampton Football Club’s appeal against the Independent Disciplinary Commission’s decision in respect of breaches of EFL Regulations.

As a result, the original sanction remains in force. Southampton’s expulsion from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs stands, alongside the four-point deduction to be applied to the Club’s 2026/27 Championship record and the reprimand in respect of all charges. In accordance with EFL Regulations, the decision of the League Arbitration Panel is final.

Following the conclusion of the proceedings, the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final between Hull City and Middlesbrough is confirmed as taking place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 23 May, kicking off at 3.30pm.

    The correct decision.
I feel sorry for the aspiring entrepreneurs who'd ordered thousands of Southampton v Hull half and half scarves ready for the final.
Dont feel sorry for the club as they brought this on themselves.

      Utter stupidity by their club.

Have to laugh at their stupid captain and his taunting of Ayling with the spying gesture when they scored.

Not to mention their camouflage fans.

They quite obviously knew what they were doing having looked at the historic Leeds fine of £200K and figured that it was a drop in the ocean compared to the Premier League riches. Stupid stupid. The fans don’t deserve it! Heads should roll and the EFL have acted brilliantly in my estimation. I don’t believe for a moment that their manager was not aware, and was quite possibly the instigator. I don’t expect we will see him next season.

They missed the bit where the rules and penalties have changed since the Leeds incident.

Southampton's reaction to the appeal failing is decent. They and the FA now need to investigate individuals who sanctioned a junior member of staff to film opponents despite the rules having been beefed up since Leeds did similar.

I wouldn't be surprised if the manager knew what was happening and if so should be banned for a period as happened in the women's game.

Unfortunately we now have Hull threatening legal action should they lose on Saturday and Wrexham also making noises. Even if the 4 point deduction was applied this season Wrexham wouldn't have made the playoffs.

Like most of us, I don’t think they could possibly have imagined that the EFL would be so tough!

Aye, Hull been spying on Southampton all week when they could have a bloke with binoculars just up the road, I’d be annoyed!

I dont think its Wrexham Football club making noises. It was just one player Josh Windass.
They haven't got a case at all.

The one thing that bugs me is that it was Ollie McBurnies goals that got Hull into the play offside. Cant stand him.

                    Re: Southampton appeal rejected

Having just watched the Not the Top 20 podcast about spygate 2.0 and having read Southampton's reaction it seems like they want to move on quickly to avoid further scrutiny because as the punishment is 2 points per league game caught spying I suspect they did it against most clubs and could find themselves with an unrecoverable points deduction next season if further digging were to happen.

Also the manager admitted the practice is normal on the continent. I'm not sure it is however his comments seem to suggest he was aware of or even directed the spying to happen.

Eating snails is normal on the continent, but we don’t do it here

                        'Tough' or clever?

EFL appointed an independent panel to make initial decision and then a separate panel to consider the appeal, making it quite clear that the case could not be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

So the EFL cannot be held to account for the decision made (?)

Hull want to appeal if they lose the play-off for a variety of reasons including not knowing who they will be playing against until yesterday.

Middlesboro have been left in limbo, not knowing if they were going to be involved and the fans have to make travel plans at the last moment, probably costing them more than would have been the case if they had beaten Southampton.

Given the punishments that Rangers and Juventus got some years ago (albeit for different issues), maybe Southampton have got off lightly.

They were singing, " We'll spy when we want"

Yes, and stay down and have four points docked brilliant

Hopefully, the other clubs check their CCTV and see if they can catch that bloke at their training grounds, we need them with 20 points down.
