Right, my mother in laws mother died last week.
The plot was already paid for and she is going to be buried to her husband.
So the in laws went to a funeral director where they said they need to remove the old head stone first to dig the grave and sort new headstone out. They will store it and look after it.
She didn't sign any paperwork and wanted a quote before any work was to be carried out.
Now she's woken up to a letter saying theyve taken the headstone and they want £165 deposit.
    I'm stunned.
My mother in law is tamping because they didn't have a price off them and they got the stone locked away and are playing hard ball and want the deposit.
I reckon we should call the police and call theft a
And a call to the echo.
    What do you say?

Very unusual for a funeral director to not quote any charges.

The plot has been bought but that would not have included headstone removal, it's storage or amendment to include the additional name. Somebody has to pay so obviously that would be for the executors of the Will to arrange with the cost coming out of the deceased person's estate. In all probability the cemetery would not allow any Tom, Dick or Harry to remove a headstone so my guess is that the charge is fixed by the cemetery authority who would use their own staff. As for storage and amendment to the headstone that is a separate issue but my guess is that the £165 relates to a fixed cost outside the Funeral Director's control.

yes my mistake, the issue is not with the funeral directors but with the engravers.

Whoever sorts it out, you won’t get much change out of £1500.00
