Barry Cryer: Comedian and writer dies aged 86
Very sad, Barry Cryer really was a comedy genius. If you look through the credits of many of the better quality sitcoms over the years, Barry Cryer was involved in its writing. Very entertaining as a person too.

One of the best comic writers of the past century. 'Genius' is sometimes used lightly, but not with Barry Cryer.

Stephen Fry on twitter this morning :

Such sad news, one of the absolute greats of British comedy, Barry Cryer, is no more. A glorious, gorgeous, hilarious and gifted writer and performer who straddled all the comic traditions. Universally beloved … farewell, Baz.

That's it. He may not have been as much of a performer as others, but as a writer he was more prolific than most.

In recent years when a comedy great has died Barry Cryer has been on TV paying tribute.

Sadly it is now his turn to have the tributes paid to him.

As you say a comedy genius

Once he said he would only retire when the phone stopped ringing. That is why he was able to stay in work for so long. He was a comedy great especially as a writer and will be sadly missed.

He was always ready to laugh at other comedians' jokes even when he must have known the punchlines.

It is worth listening to his podcast - Now Where were we? with Barry Cryer - It is him chatting with friends, retelling old stories. Unfortunately there's only 6 episodes. It is really very very good

Seen him at the London Palladium with John Cooper Clarke and my mate Simon Day. RIP BC and thanks for all the Laughs you gave us.

Ironically, I did find his autobiography a bit dull.
