What a difference it makes having a player who has pace when he is in the ball. Something we have probably never seen, a midfield player who plays with pace, urgency and intensity, always looking to get the ball in forward areas, decision making very quick. I don't know where Doyle will end up or how he will get on in his career, but his performances show us how stagnant, slow, reactive and ponderous our central midfield has been for so many years. Rock on Tommy!

Re: Tommy Doyle
yes he's highly rated at man city. think there's a chance he'll go out on loan again next season though.Originally posted by J R Hartley View PostYep, excellent last night. Best we can hope for is another years loan I’d say. Will be out of our price range if trying to do a permanent deal.
we won't have done our chances of picking up more good players from them any harm though, especially when you consider how the loan to Hamburg basically wasted half a season of development for him.

I think he's class but how rated is he at Man City really? You need to be Foden levels to make it into the first team there as an academy graduate, and as good as he is I don't think he's thatOriginally posted by Rjk View Postyes he's highly rated at man city. think there's a chance he'll go out on loan again next season though.

Re: Tommy Doyle
Isn't it just nice to see a midfield player who actually wants the ball, and who wants to use it positively as opposed to treating it like a ticking time bomb. It shows how starved we have been of any quality in that position for so many years.Originally posted by J R Hartley View PostYep, excellent last night. Re: Tommy Doyle
Most midfielders worth their salt want the ball. The problem is since Warnock we've focused on physical hard worker types and we've been stuck with them ever since. Hopefully those days are over.Originally posted by Tuerto View PostIsn't it just nice to see a midfield player who actually wants the ball, and who wants to use it positively as opposed to treating it like a ticking time bomb. Absolutely. I don’t think there will be many games where he will get that kind of time and space that he had last night mind but so far so good.Originally posted by Tuerto View PostIsn't it just nice to see a midfield player who actually wants the ball, and who wants to use it positively as opposed to treating it like a ticking time bomb. Pep Guardiola refused to name the youngsters he is thinking of including in his plans for the next campaign
mostly guesswork but there are a few articles like that around.
Although the ones written after his time in Germany don't mention Doyle as often, unsurprisingly.

Re: Tommy Doyle
I don't think it is just the players we had here under Warnock, it is also what they're being asked to do week in week out and in training. You quickly lose your edge if you're going long periods without the ball and wen you get it you have to launch it every time - it is little wonder that after a season or so of that, the players skills become severely dulled.Originally posted by Bald Barry Bastad View PostMost midfielders worth their salt want the ball. If you took a good test cricketer, with a sound defence, but then made him play 20-20 for 2 years and just concentrate on smashing it about the park, then when he tried to go back to test cricket he'd be useless. These things need to be constantly maintained.

We are not professional footballers or coaches but practically every single one of us has pointed to our ponderous midfield and said what you've stated above. Thank goodness the dinosaurs have left the building and we can now start afresh.Originally posted by Tuerto View PostIsn't it just nice to see a midfield player who actually wants the ball, and who wants to use it positively as opposed to treating it like a ticking time bomb. I read a very good report of the game online (possibly the Daily Telegraph), in which the reporter said that the way we played last night bore no resemblance to "McCarthy's hoofballers" who visited London Road earlier in the season. On the one hand I'm delighted that our change of style has been recognised by a neutral but on the other slightly embarrassed that our name has been synonymous with what's been euphemistically called 'direct football' for so long.
Hopefully, this will be the start of a refreshing new era. Too early to say whether Morison should be our permanent coach but he certainly has the vision to move us forward and performances like last night will only enhance his reputation.

Re: Tommy Doyle
I don't think that we actually played direct in the truest sense of the word. Warnock is a one off, he has a style of play like no other, it's unique in my opinion, nobody else would dare to play in the anti football fashion that he did, it reflected him as a person I think. McCarthy to a lesser degree, I'm sure that he wasn't as bad as he was with us while he was at Wolves, but towards the end of his reign his style and tactics were probably worse than what Warnock was knocking out.Originally posted by Moodybluebird View PostWe are not professional footballers or coaches but practically every single one of us has pointed to our ponderous midfield and said what you've stated above. To me, direct football was very prominent in the eighties and early nineties. It wasn't all bad though, there was some method involved and there were still fantastic footballers about who thrives.
What we witnessed, at times, was against everything the game is about in my opinion. If a clubs main tactic was a 90 minute fest in attempting to force the opposition in to making mistakes then we were top of the tree for the best part of 5 years.

Re: Tommy Doyle
Ralls took the ball last night under pressure while facing our goal, rolled his man and drove forward. 6 weeks ago, that would have been hooked away for a throw in.Originally posted by Tuerto View PostIsn't it just nice to see a midfield player who actually wants the ball, and who wants to use it positively as opposed to treating it like a ticking time bomb.
