If you were in the game you’d know straight away that it’s a ‘whisker’.

I have a bubble in the “stick” I got at trade school 36 years ago.
Now I find out what it’s for.

Used to be some great sayings by the characters from years ago. When I came out of my time I worked with a gang from Splott, all way older than me. I learnt the world from them, more strokes than a tabby cat, what an education, they ran rings around management, the young ‘just out of college’ engineers couldn’t cope on times. There’s been a lot of talk on here lately re. management bullying the workers, f*ck me this was the workers crucifying the management. Young QSs were not just taken to the cleaners when doing the measure, they were put in the washing machine, through the mangle, hung on the line then ironed flat. Great days, great fun, great education.

I remember one of the old heads telling me that you don't compromise with site agents, Clerk of the works, building inspectors etc, his words were "Don't give them a chance to speak, start bullying them the minute they come on site"

Re: Things they should teach you in school

Imperial and metric have both been used for years, sometimes together.
Example timber, "Go and get me 18 lengths of 4x2, and eye it up!
                    "How long?"
                    "4.8 metres."
No one bats an eyelid at this kind of thing.
Pythagoras, as someone said, if you are marking for a lift pit in an establish slab its invaluable to make sure you **** the clag at 90.
If kids didn't do maths at school how could they know all these invaluable tools for life?

One of the old guys used to send me to the stores to get some 22mm bends and lengths of 3/4 copper tube

If a kid can understand why petrol and diesel is sold in litres, and a car's fuel usage is predominantly advertised in mpg, and work out each equivalent, then they could go a long way.

Still goes on now. Worked with plenty of what you'd call younger lads who do this as well.

Actually, you are right, 4 X 2 and then metic length, I never thought of that

though the youngest lot would say 100 X 50 these days I guess, I had a guy come and do a few days work for me building a " home office " for a customer, he only spoke in metric
