On her way back from Iran apparently with another detainee Anoosheh Ashoori.

If it was just down to the repayment of a £300m+ debt then why didn't the UK pay it earlier?

great news for her and her family

you do wonder what has been negotiated behind the scenes. Iran has a lot of oil stored up and ready to go apparently.

Did I hear on the radio this morning that the unpaid bill to Iran dates back to the seventies?

Great that her ordeal is finally over, but it should never have taken this long to get her released.

There's a very good BBC podcast 'Nazanin' which gives the background to all of this. And, yes, it goes back decades.

Liz Truss said earlier "We have been clear this is a legitimate debt that we do owe Iran and we have been seeking ways to pay it."

I would imagine with the longstanding sanctions in place against Iran, it isn't a simple matter to just hand over 100's of millions of pounds to them?

Well a well connected politcal commenator left leaning one , has suggessted this solution was done and ready within the Raab tennership for some reason the Irainians delayed ?

Truss didnt come up with this as its not some form of brillant iease to just ca ve in and pay , it was discccsued and debated for years , im guessing something somewhere maybe added and we will never know .

If thats the case , again poor Iraninans as the poor lady still had to suffer .

The podcast mentioned above is a good summary of the 40 odd years of debt non-payment by the UK government.

Various periods of sanctions have been used as a reason for non-payment, but the USA paid off a debt to Iran to get some of its citizens released years ago - and last year the UK pulled out of an agreement with Iran at the request of the USA who wanted to co-ordinate hostage releases - partly tied to the renewed nuclear deal negotiations (post Trump). That fell apart and, as I understand it, the UK government decided not to tailgate the USA but go ahead with unilateral negotiations. It seems that came down mainly to paying the debt. It could have happened years ago. Zaghari-Ratcliffe didn't have to be a pawn in a political game.
