There's no local authority for Cardiff, the Vale, the valleys, Bridgend but its known as the Cardiff metropolitan area , about 800000, 1.1 million including Newport

South Hampshire .....Southampton and Portsmouth, 1.6 million

If we take just Southampton, the city , together with the built up area around it .....the Southampton urban area is about twice the size of Cardiff

Cardiff as a football club has the valleys , Bridgend, the Vale of Glamorgan etc within driving distance but they are not part of Cardiffs urban area ....25 miles away in some cases

Cardiff and Newport and the valleys and Bridgend don't join ......not yet anyway

Don't engage with him. He's been argumentative and somewhat shell-shocked since Monday evening.

He predicted "The 'Pool" would trounce Crystal Palace 5-0 (and that was just at halftime) and has had a cob on since they flopped. He was supremely confident before their opening fixture at Fulham as well.

              You are wrong

              Southampton urban area 800k
              Cardiff 450 or so

Cardiff is bigger as a city but smaller as an urban area

Nottingham , Newcastle .........both smaller cities than Cardiff ......but far bigger urban built up areas

It makes me laugh when people think Cardiff.....is bigger than .....Newcastle

As a dot on the map maybe but the urban expanse is huge . Go to Newcastle or Nottingham or Southampton , go around the places

              Far bigger than Cardiff

South Hampshire is the name given to the population of the Southampton, Portsmouth built up area ..1. 6 million ......that's bigger than the south Wales built up area

You said Hampshire has a population of 1.6 million .......that's only Southampton and Portsmouth.....

                Re: Terrible terrible Birmingham

2021 census doesn’t mention S Hampshire, so perhaps they have changed the boundaries

                Hampshire 1,400,800 716,000 684,700
                Basingstoke and Deane 185,200 93,500 91,700

"In the 2001 census Portsmouth and Southampton were recorded as being parts of separate urban areas however by the time of the 2011 census they had merged to become the sixth largest built-up area in England with a population of 855,569"

The figure you're quoting as being Southampton's urban area also includes Portsmouth. The total urban population of Southampton in 2001 was 304,000 so either it's trebled in 20 years or they've included Portsmouth since 2011, which seems more likely?

This map: https://www.citypopulation.de/en/uk/cities/englandua/ shows the urban area, it includes Portsmouth

                      Re: Terrible terrible Birmingham

Cardiff apparently is around 400,000 as a city , in 2022

Population change in certain areas may reflect how the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affected people's choice of usual residence on Census Day, for example, students in Cardiffs case and in other urban areas of the city itself people were not at home.

Well the town centre where you go to primark might be but not the wider urban area

Even if it was bigger than Cardiff (urban area ) which I’d argue it isn’t the area you are talking about has a significantly higher amount of people aged 60-90 compared to the Cardiff Urban Area,so it could be argued that would impact support.
