We got rid of most of the squad from last season and we’ve not adequately replaced them. If our budget was so small (I don’t think it was) why did we spend £500k on a project in Etete. I don’t think we gave him the 9 shirt to be a project either, I think it’s because he’s clearly not up to it. He isn’t a player. Simpson was dreadful at Rangers and now he’s behind Nelson. Why do we have so many players if the budget was so tight? They’ve thrown loads of shit at the wall and hope some of it stuck. I think we could just about scrape a team of Championship players together and we have a squad of about 30. It’s a joke
We lost fifteen players I believe it was in the summer, so I’d say something like thirteen newcomers in was a bare minimum and Morison would have had to be a genius (which he plainly isn’t) to have got all of those deals spot on. Tan is being delusional if he thinks this could be a promotion squad, but how many of our seven wins so far this season do you think weren’t deserved? Norwich possibly, but the we were clearly the better team in the other six and we’re going to stay up if we keep on winning games at the rate we’ve done so up to now.

He is currently on a 40% hit rate on transfers in my book. The problem is that so many of the misses aren’t just bad, they are horrendous. It isn’t a promotion squad, we have 12/13 players that are capable of being regulars at this level at this moment in time. If that.

Anybody would think we had promoted a coach with no previous experience as manager straight into the hot seat and told him to rebuild an almost full squad. Oh wait...

Yes, it was stupid at the time and it is stupid now. I've said that all along. He never should have been given the job.
I doubt few if any managers could bring in 17 players without some flops. When he became manager we were heading for league 1 with a squad of players designed to play a 'pragmatic' style of football, but were incapable of even doing that. It wasn't 'dinosaur' football, it was worse. We didn't have the sort of squad you could build on - there was nothing there, so apart from the summer recruitment he also found new homes for a number of highly paid, poor footballers. We're playing sides that have built their teams over 3 or 4 seasons - we did it in a matter of weeks. As I said, if we avoid a relegation battle, that's success for this season.
Some flops is OK. He's brought in 10 players that aren't ready or good enough. The issue is, the ones that aren't good enough are so far from good enough we can't cope with 2/3 injuries/suspensions. Missing 2 first team players shouldn't result in the alarming drop off in performances we so often see.

Yet I heard the Sunderland co commentator on Saturday Darren Collins describe us as the best side to visit the Stadium of Light this season only four days ago. We’ve been poor in a lot of games so far, but there appear to be quite a few on here who aren’t willing to acknowledge that we’ve played well in a few matches as well. It’s not as unremittingly negative as some would have it.

Plenty of movers and shakers in that list, we are not unique in huge overall of squads this summer.

We had all of our key players bar Robinson fit and in the team. We have 12/13 capable players at this level, and if we get them out at the same time we will be OK. It is just when 2 or 3 are injured, the drop off is huge.

Great post and didn't bilic say something similar - it would have been interesting to see where we were with our injured players of Adams Collins Colwill and Davies for at least part of the season but these 4 have been most for 1 and all for 3 of them
I still think we are a creative midfielder and 1 possibly 2 strikers off a half decent side - not getting into play offs or anything but good enough to see us safe early and then build on top of what we have next summer

The more I think about it, the more I believe a good experienced manager would get our squad into top10 comfortably. A few flops yes, but a hardcore of decent players at this level. Add a striker and we are ok.
Like Hudson, hope he can do the job now he's confirmed.
