    Re: Pele

Pele and the 1970 World Cup was my introduction to football. I thought he was the best player in the world until I saw my first City game in the September and realised he was a poor man’s John Toshack!

Sincerely hope he doesn’t suffer too much in what looks like his final days

Very sad, remember watching him score against Wales in Q/F 1958 World Cup. Amazing player.

Seems that there is some doubt as to the validity of the story, but it has a ring of truth to it to me. The 1970 Brazil side must have been the starting point for a life time love of football for thousands or maybe even millions and Pele was right at the heart of that.

Greatest footballer ever. No one will surpass him. There was nothing he couldn’t do. He had it all, especially the intelligence. Conducted himself beautifully on and off the football pitch. A fantastic ambassador for the game and in general, in every way possible. Puts todays so called Prima Donna ‘s to a great deal of shame.

Great as he was I never really got the plaudits of the greatest.

Sad to hear of his health issues as he was a good ambassador for Samba football

            I'd settle for 82 innings ..

"Greatest footballer ever" - I'm not so sure about that (I'm at an age to remember him playing).

Most of the archive clips of him, that keep getting repeated, are about his near misses.

I'd put Christian Ronaldo and Messi ahead of him.

              It's all subjective, of course.

Greatest of his generation, Ronaldo and Messi theirs. The only way you could find the greatest of all time is to pit them against others of theirs. As you say it’s all subjective. Pele though was the greatest of mine.

That dummy he did in front of the 18 yard box to confuse that defender in the 1970 world cup ......incredible

And the way he got up to power that header in v Italy ? Incredible strength and timing

I think the reason why I think he was the best was because he was in my opinion more of an all round player than best and Maradona.......I don't think they would be remembered for their power in the air

He was incredibly strong , fit and an athlete, best , Maradona were great skilful players but off their heads half the time

Pele conducted himself gracefully and will be remembered as the greatest by most football fans

This. A wonderful player, but you can't really compare him to players of today. Football is a different game now. Strength, fitness and endurance are at completely different levels.

Toshack absolutely my childhood hero. Stood many hours in the Grange End watching him set Ninian Park alight. I suppose he's why I've always had a soft spot for Liverpool.

Dunno about Maradona in the air. He had a bit of a reputation in that regard.
