Re: FT: ENGLAND 3 - 0 SENEGAL. Match thread

England are yet to play a decent team, USA were the best they played against

Looking forward to seeing them compete with mbappe, not sure Stones / Magiure have the pace or skill to contain him, I guess Rice will drop back deep aswell

I wish England every success. I've never understood the hostility. So far as I'm concerned, they're family, along with Scotland. I remember as a kid being heartbroken when they lost to Brazil 1-0 in 1970 and then 3-2 to West Germany after being 2-0 up. We share a courageous history, from the Industrial Revolution through Chartism to the greatness of the Liberal Party and then the arrival of the Labour Party, not to mention two world wars. Moore, Hurst, Peters, Stiles and the Charlton brothers were very much of the soil, and I loved them for it. And don't forget, the English let Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and, maybe soon, Wrexham, play in their league. Thanks for that, lads. And good luck against France.

I've never been to France, and I have never had any French friends either.

I've lived and worked in England, and I have had many good English friends over the years.

        C'mon England!

I don't wish them every success

I don't hate the England football team , I think Southgate is clearly a good guy but I hope France beat them

Christ! What's with the England love-in?
They haven't shut up about 1966 yet, god knows how insufferable they'd be if they got a second win!

It doesn't matter in a WC. Getting out of the group is the priority. Once you're in the knockout phase it's open season. Traditionally teams that start off either slowly or even lose a match go on and win it. Hitting form when it counts is everything in a WC. I think England could well go on and win this one.

And the Pele love-in, if it wasn’t for that bugger, 1966 might have been ‘after the lord mayor’s show’……………..nah, Pele’s ok but that 1958 goal still poses a ‘what if’.

Only one team has ever won the world cup after losing their first game, Spain in 2010.

There are very few unexpected world cup winners. Can anyone name even one?

I thought Italy lost a group match once and it doesn't have to be their opening match. Eric'll soon sort this out. The Brazil v Germany semi without Neymar on home soil was a curve ball surely? I'm probably talking bollox and not remembering stuff though. The usual.

Edit: I wouldn't say England are unexpected winners though this time.

Yeah teams have won with a defeat in the groups.

This time, every country has failed to win at least one game, so I guess you'll be right this time! But it also doesn't help with predictions or omens...

Seems like some fans are preparing themselves for an England triumph with the old "Actually I don't mind if they win" and "We're all British" stuff. I hear you. It's going to be a tough time for all of us and we need to be here for each other and if this is your way of getting through it I understand.

                              Other things to tell oneself:

"They're a good team and a likeable bunch".
"They should really have won something by now so technically it's overdue".
"This way they'll stop going on about 1966".
"When they called me a Welsh c**t it was affectionate".
"They only suppressed our language and culture so they could chat with us".
"When they flooded that village it was to give us a lido but it got out of hand and they felt embarrassed so turned it into a reservoir".
"Maybe it'll give them a bit more confidence and rid themselves of that cultural inferiority complex".

                              (Vive la France)

We have had all this ...its a good England side type nonsense many times

If they win it then its good for the country

                                But that's England, not Wales

I hope they get clobbered personally
