I don't think you can deal with any form of calculus, but that's beside the point.

We're on a bounce, and there's no reason to assume the likes of Wigan, Blackpool, Huddersfield etc. aren't going to step up a gear. New managers, new players, they'll fight all the way. For City, I've no idea which way this is going to turn - we could just keep ourselves out of the bottom 3, or possibly go on a run and move away. Personally, if we're where we are now, after 33 games and just 13 left, then we are probably going to the wire with this. 48pts is 1.5pts per game - probably near enough to just survive..

43 has been enough over the last 5 seasons.

But yeah let's just go for 48 cos the CCMB echo chamber is having a breakdown.

You don't need to run as fast as Usain Bolt to avoid being eaten by a cheetah. Just faster than your companion.

Huddersfield in 22nd have 31 points from 32 games. Projected over 46 matches, that comes out at 44.5 points. Add in Warnock getting them off to a flier and being good at turning things around, they could easily get on a run. Wigan and Blackpool also come out around 44.5, though I don't have as much faith they'll improve as Huddersfield will.

Rotherham would project at 47.4 points.

The league this season doesn't seem to have as wide a points distribution, 9 points between 4th and 16th after all, so think 48 is possibly a better figure than 43, could even be higher.

We just need to win our games.

I've not been bothered by relegation, I just did a Google search.

The average is 47. Last 5 have been 43.

We'll stay up whatever it is.

Let's be honest, Sludge has just googled the average so if it hits close he can call himself a superstar. Predictable old bore.

                    True.

I think this season could be higher than average, if I'm honest. It's what, 18 points between Sunderland in 6th and Huddersfield in 22nd.
I'd be surprised if it's been that "close" before. I suspect it'll need to be a higher than average number of points to stay up.

I was definitely in the 'we're doomed' camp a week ago. Now things are looking up I can be a bit more hopeful. My guess is 48 pts as well. With the relegated teams coming from the current bottom 6.
As far as the poor quality of the division goes, I have speculated its because clubs have not been able to spend because of the financial effects of coronavirus. This has also evened up the division.

But results tonight and Saturday will be vital
