Jeff Hemmerman never recovered. I was ten years old, and was petrified. I have the game on VHS somewhere. I can see myself being escorted out of the away end towards safer pastures by Avon and Somerset's finest. (My old man moaning at me, in tow) It was a warm day and my mother made me wear a duffle coat. If my kids had experienced any of that, or the special train pulling up at Portsmouth harbour that same season with the bricks and bottles raining down on us, they'd have PTSD.

Following the City, as many do as the only club, I always remember looking forward to the “Big Match” of a Sunday afternoon when Brian Moore used to say “the big derby coming up” and anticipating Liverpool v Man Utd… but after the advert it would then cut to “the big derby” from Twerton Park for Bristol Rovers v Bristol City.
However, they did show that final game when “… Hemmerman, Hemmerman… Jeffrey Hemmerman… when he gets the ball he scores a goal… Jeffrey Hemmerman” got that bad injury that effectively ended his career.

Re: Pre season Matches - UPDATED WITH NEW FIXTURE
City wanted a friendly against the side they played in their first ever fixture. Unfortunately Canton Cloggers disbanded in 1901.

I agree with what you said, play local teams and put the money into the local community.
Long gone is the back- in- the- day thinking when we were $hit and resorted to looking forward to an FA Cup run and hope for a home draw against a First Division side; when that was the best we could hope for as fans.
Nowadays, we are currently still $hit, and not taking the FA Cup, one of the best competitions in the World seriously enough, in the hope we might finish safe in mid-table-mediocrity.
Why not give back to the community in a pre-season game against a local team motivated to give their best? Surely it is a better run out, than a “jolly jape, after you, well played Sir, comfortable non-committal affair.

Re: Pre season Matches - UPDATED WITH NEW FIXTURE
We do play local teams but send our u21s instead. Playing Kidderminster seems odd instead of a team like Merthyr but I don't think we want to play on the astroturf. And, of course, many teams might have already organised their games before we even began.

Pre-Season 2024 | Hamburger SV vs. Cardiff City
The Bluebirds will take on Hamburger SV in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, July 21st in Bramberg, Austria.
The fixture will take place at the Smaragd-Arena in Bramberg, which is the home of Austrian fourth division side, TSU Bramberg, with kick-off at 4pm local time (3pm UK time).
Ticket details and streaming information for this fixture, along with details of additional friendlies taking place in Austria, will be confirmed in due course.
Hamburg compete in the 2. Bundesliga and finished the 2023/24 campaign in fourth position, narrowly missing out on a chance at promotion to the top tier of German football.
Managed by Steffen Baumgart, Hamburg's top scorer last term was former City striker Robert Glatzel, who scored 11 goals in 58 appearances for the Bluebirds between 2019 and 2021.
This will be our first meeting with Die Rothosen since the 1967/68 European Cup Winners' Cup Semi-Final. A memorable piece of Cardiff City history, the Bluebirds battled with Hamburg over two legs for a spot in the Final, with the German side narrowly winning 4-3 on aggregate.
2024 pre-season fixtures
Cardiff City vs. Kidderminster Harriers. Cardiff International Sports Campus, Wednesday 10th July, 7:30pm.
Cardiff City vs. K.V. Kortrijk. Cardiff International Sports Campus, Saturday 13th July, 12pm.
Cardiff City vs. Penybont FC. Cardiff International Sports Campus, Tuesday 16th July, 7:30pm.
Hamburger SV vs. Cardiff City. Smaragd-Arena, Bramberg, Sunday 21st July, 4pm (local time)
Cardiff City vs. Reading FC. Cardiff City Stadium, Wednesday 31st July, 7:30pm.
Bristol Rovers vs. Cardiff City. Memorial Stadium, Saturday 3rd August, 3pm.

Barcelona are celebrating their 125th anniversary too this year. Bit snobby of us not to offer them a game.

Bramberg....half way up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. As an incentive to go, will there be signed 10p footballs?

Last week they said south west Salzburg. Bramberg is three hours on the train from there (and will have a bus replacement service part of the way on the 21st) so it's like saying we're playing in south west Cardiff and it turns out to be Minehead. But there we are. Looks very scenic but won't be the easiest away trip.

I suppose it is SW of Salzburg….Munich is cheap enough to fly to, train and bus from there is an option.

Bramberg is where HSV are based that week. So other fixtures could be elsewhere. I'm going to go - maybe rent a car.

He's probably hoping that at the end of the day football's the winner.

They’re only a kick about, better than running around cones all day.
