Strangely, Radio Wales have forgotten that game as well, they were reporting today as our heaviest defeat in seventy years.
Don't worry. I guess we have a tendency to erase the worst results from our minds.
In a nutshell Rino (cm) and CO'D (lw) are not full backs. They have done a fairly decent job there but they are not defenders. Once they or most of the modern day full backs come up against proper wingers, players who have pace and take players on on the outside instead of incessantly cutting in (a la Saka), they are exposed. Cruelly this happened today.
Today may well have been an opportunity to play a simple 442 with Ng and Bagan at full back and El Ghazi & O'Dowda in front of them, thus cutting down the space in front of the full backs that a 4231 allows.
StT.

I wouldn't look at systems. I expected to lose but to ship 7 just shows a complete lack of guts and fight from all players and coaching staff.
I think they went up there expecting defeat and showed no fight.
Just pathetic the lot of them.
IF and its a big If we need serious changes in playing and coaching staff if we stay up and hope to progress next season.

Re: FT: LEEDS UNITED 7 (seven) - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Going to a back 3 when you’re getting ripped apart by wingers and full backs is genuinely insane.
Bagan on at LCB was mental, Daland getting hooked again and Fish isn’t fancied. We need a centre half tomorrow or Monday.
The rest, is basic stuff. That was appalling. Tactically, technically and mentally weak. Still, I didn’t expect us to get anything. I don’t think the full backs need to be singled out by anyone when they were all dreadful

The hope is we didn't actually play full backs at full back in a 7 goal defeat. So maybe we should going forward play a genuine RB and LB.
Such is the manner of this defeat though the entire coaching set up and all players should be completely embarrassed.

Leeds is a very tough fixture along with Burnley, Sunderland, good job we haven't got them next when we are low in confidence after a stuffing, that would be terrible bad luck to have a run of fixtures like that.

Fair play, these heroes of ours are breaking some records this season. It’s a good job they’re getting new contracts.
I'm sure we conceded 7 to Luton away, and Jimmy Andrews was then sacked. In your lifetime.
However, we might have scored one.

We did. Ray Bishop scored it. So that was a six-goal defeat. Not a seven-goal defeat. Today was the only seven-goal defeat in my lifetime. But not yours, old man. 😉

I do understand the meaning of heaviest defeat, which is why I posted as I did.
However, we did concede 7, which I feel is relevant.
Thanks for the ageist comment.

We conceded 7 at home to Cambridge in April 1994. But we scored 2 that day. So that was equally relevant/irrelevant (delete as applicable).

I think the management needs to accept some the blame for that. We were set up with a high press that Leeds just skipped around and then were in on goal repeatedly. That was insane in the circumstances.
Some the players really need to look at themselves too - El G in particular.

Low block all day against Leeds, especially at their place. If you give them space to play they are virtually press resistant.

Well our goal difference was improving, that couldn't continue.
Shows where we really are as if many of us didn't already know.

The talk on here was that we need to press and get at them.
Hindsight eh.

Relevant, obviously.
"Heavy defeat" may not just be about the margin. Though statistically obsessed people may disagree. And good luck to them.

Rino and COD are full backs now. I'd be more concerned we've had to substitute Daland is 3 of his last 7 games because he's been that bad. Goutas has been here 18 months, he's been subbed twice, once for a striker as we were chasing the game, and once as he was injured. I am not writing Daland off but we cannot keep playing a liability.
We didn't lose today because one player had a stinker, they were all dreadful. Daland didn't affect our midfielders treating it like a hot potato. A real bad day at the office and one that they should all have a long, hard look at themselves over.

Re: FT: LEEDS UNITED 7 (seven) - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Everyone seems to be fixated on the fullbacks, I doubt many would have started either anyone other than Rino or ODowda.
To say Rino is a midfielder is fair but he’s been excellent at fullback. ODowda hasn’t played regular as a winger since Morison. He’s signed a new 3 year deal basically as FB.
Midfield or lack of was the issue, we basically invited them into us. The attacks were constant. NG and Bagan came on and did no better.

Keep trying to dig yourself out of the hole you’ve created and you could reach Australia by the morning.
Heaviest defeat has always meant the margin of defeat.

Jimmy Andrew’s was sacked after a 4-1 home loss to Charlton a couple of months later.

I’m struggling to think of a heavier CIty defeat in terms of the difference between the two teams that I’ve seen (maybe the 5:0 to Man City in 18/19?) - 7-0 flattered us.

In an ideal world, we'd be looking at two centre backs, neither if them are up to it

Re: FT: LEEDS UNITED 7 (seven) - 0 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
With Brighton getting thumped 7.0, two 7.0 defeats on the same day, I doubt that it,s happened that many times before in the top 4 English divisions. I Don't think many thought much chance of getting anything from the game before it kicked off. 1.0 or 7.0, 0 points is 0 points and it's what was expected before the game, hopefully the team will have done enough that the goal difference isn't a relegation decider.

I wonder if the coaching staff looked at any opposition match videos before this game?

I thought that was mad. We needed two solid banks of 4 to combat them with pace out wide to push their full backs back. Switching to a back three gave their full backs free rein.

Win against Stoke and Portsmouth and this result will be somewhat forgotten
Better to lose 1 game 7-0 than 7 games 1-0

We'd had the worst ever start to a season in our history but there have been 30 seasons where we'd lost more than 13 games after 30 matches, so that's a small positive after a dismal start.
Here's a spooky comparison for you. 1974/75 vs 2024/25 - 50 years apart
1974/75: P 30 W 7 D 10 L 13 GD -14
2024/25: P 30 W 7 D 10 L 13 GD -18
They're the only two seasons with identical w/d/l records after 30 games where we've lost 13 matches.

74/75 - the season during which I saw my first Cardiff City games (it will be my fiftieth anniversary in March). City were relegated.

I’m struggling to understand the number of fans trying to brush this off as ‘one defeat we thought would happen anyway’. It’s appalling and I really hope it doesn’t start a rot we can’t get out of.

So you started watching a side that was in control of its own destiny in terms of relegation. Then you decided to become a regular, they lost 5 of their last 6, blew their games in hand and the point advantage they had over others, and were relegated.
I think I've found the Cardiff City curse! ;-)
