As soon as he became speaker he became and independent having to resign from his original party and as is tradition, whilst he was speaker no one stood against him in any election.
He actually became a labour MP a week or so ago. Let's see how he does in the next election he stands in.
So apart from the fact that Labour and Conservatives don't take turns at being speaker, the voting records on electing a Speaker are unproven, that his seat was regularly contested by other parties whilst he was Speaker and he is not a Labour MP I couldn't agree more!
