I wonder if Charlie and his missus will get theirs? Now there's a couple desperate for something to tide them over.

Although I don't disagree on this point, there isn't a huge intellectual jump to then ask why we are helping Mick Jagger with his healthcare costs or street lights or anything else the public purse pays for.

can we please stop with the Mick Jagger stuff, every thread on here is constantly one wrong move away from becoming a pun thread and I feel like you're really dangling the worm out there with this line of conversation

I know what you mean but don't get too upset about it. You would be a fool to cry about it

    Two more great examples thanks.

As I've said as long as those who need it get it I don't have an issue. If those who need it don't get it that is a problem. I suspect many on here don't need it but resent losing it.

Id prefer if they applied the need it , get it to the free prescription policy in wales and not this mindset for pensioners. Pensioners who have spent all of their working lives paying into the tax system

Totally agree on "need it, get it) but I'm not sure why or wherefore it relates to people paying into the tax system.

Pensioners such as my father in law who have worked all their lives , have decent pensions and whose capital has been eroded by paying care home fees , dont deserve to be sidelined

I'm always slightly surprised at the way that pensioners all become hard workers the day they retire. Yes most pensioners will have worked/worked hard. But some of them won't have, some of them will have spent their whole adult life on the dole. Not a big thing but it just always makes me chuckle how the whole cohort becomes 'strivers' as soon as they've retired.

The Winter Heating Allowance is not some kind of reward for service you know! It's a taxpayer's funded hardship payment for those most in need. You've just admitted your in law is comfortably off with. a decent pension and indeed capital. Why can't he stand on his own feet if he's got capital to access?

Many many thousands are not so fortunate and are desperate for a little extra to keep themselves warm. Whether they've worked or not is irrelevant: these people need help and, unlike the Tories, who used the fund to give out bungs to their supporters, Labour is administering the allowance sensibly.

When the Tories came in , 14 plus years ago , they said they were going to FIX the care crisis ....which they made far worse in the first place by privatising the home care industry !

Who brought the allowance in in the first place?

They are not real pensioners they are just lazy bums over retirement age.

They won't tax working people, and now they are on about increasing the tax on petrol, so it is another blatant lie!

I'm sorry. As you know I lack the intelligence to understand these matters oh wise one.

How have the Consrvatives "used" the winter fuel allowance any differently than Labour?

    Noted!

Can't you see how Labour are using the fuel allowance differently now? I thought that was the crux of the Tory supporters' bellyaching?
