With Russia now threatening nuclear war by Christmas, how much is the final eight weeks of the Biden administration a threat to world peace? And do these long range missiles heading deep into Russia mean that a NATO/ RUSSIA conflict is now unavoidable?
I think Putin won't do anything dramatic in the next couple of months. He will continue his war of attrition and hope that Trump's super peace plan will include persuading Zelensky to give up the territory in the east to Russia. He will also do his best to knock out as much of Ukraine's energy infrastructure during the winter weather to heap extra hardship on the people who then may become more receptive to handing over territory just to bring about peace and stability.
Just to trivialise this thread - I genuinely thought this was about David Blunkett at Westminster tube station when I saw the title.
Seriously, Biden has created a problem for Trump, Putin, Zelenskyy and the rest of us who live on this continent. It is a two fingered sign off from the White House. I doubt it will lead to serious escalation - but some people will now die who would not have died. Putin should not be rewarded, but Ukraine has basked in a massive PR job.
The medium term outcome will be recognition of Russian occupation of Crimea and the Donbass, and Trump will pretend to be a political operator and peacemaker. Trump is a shallow, manipulated fool, Zelenskyy is playing his best ever role as a resistance hero and air brusher of recent history, and Putin remains a proto fascist dictator.
I hate Putin, what he has done to Ukraine will long be unforgivable.
Lets get this right though, the gact that the green light has been given to use Western Made Long Range missiles into Russia is absolute insanity.
I want Ukraine to win the war, but not at the expense of Armageddon.
To use the (if we had this attitude to Hitler) analogy is at best naive.
Trump may be many things, but he wouldnt allow this.
As far as NATO goes, Trump was quite correct during his first term in saying how many countries were under spending, relying on America to foot the lions share of the bill.
One thing has struck me over the last decade is how lightly George W Bush and his band of War Hawk Neocons have gotten off, just because Trump is unlikeable.
It was fukcing mental to me seeing democrats costing up with The Chaneys.
It really does highlight the utter lunacy of Trump Derangement Syndrome which in my opinion is very very real.
The fact that some would prefer perpetual war along with a slice of schadenfreude than Trump fixing things astonishes me.
Like hoping Brexit will never have any benefits or hoping that The Labour government fails.
I will never be able to wrap my head around.
Surely we all want things to better for everyone even if we sometimes disagree on how we get there?
I've been off the cigs for 3 years now but now that we are all going to be nuked to death before Christmas, I am getting back on them.
It seems pointless antagonising the loon for the next 8 weeks, the Russians aren’t really making much progress and have resorted to using foreign troops which kind of indicates they might be running low. Are they still losing 800 dead or injured everyday?
Ukraine might aswell give up the donbass area and strike a peace deal until Putins gone at least. Obviously relations between them will never heal and Russia will be subjected to terrorism for decades to come from Ukrainians a bit like we already have with the jihadists.
