Would you be kind enough to use the name of another individual when making an exclamation in future.

As you don't see Christ as anyone special then why would you pick him over Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Ganesha, Hanuman or Krishna etc?

    Christ wasn't a person's name.

truthpaste doesn't seem to understand that language reflects historical influences.
People using the name of a form of his deity in these modern times reflects the influence of Christianity in these islands just as three days of the week relate to Germanic gods.
We also use terms related to Greek mythology e.g. "Achilles Heel", "Pandora's Box", "Herculean tasks" etc.
Many Japanese proverbs come from Confucianism.
It's no more significant than historical influences.

Well being brought up here and being white and Catholic christ is a very common phrase

    F Christ's sake

    J h christ

What in God's name was that

    Etc etc

I am sure people of different backgrounds swear on or by their God even though some like you would be offended

Is shiva the God of destruction?

It makes no difference as to the name of the God, since love is the real God of all the world. (Apache maxim)

If Truthpaste had been born in an Apache encampment 200 years ago in south-central North America he would have said just that. But being Truthpaste he would have repeated it ad nauseam and bored the pants off all the other Apaches.

Maybe there would have been a young brave called stevo who was willing to sacrifice his time and sanity to keep Truthpaste occupied and away from all the normal people who deserved a quiet life?

    It is certainly a thought!

The funny thing is..... is that religion fascinates me - but so few believers understand the context of their so-called holy books and how they were collated, edited, amended, influenced by pre-existing religions, and how contradictory they are and how little their content is supported by real evidence. They can read about their 'loving' god on the one hand whilst learning about their deity killing people, having women raped and others subjected to cruelty at the behest of their big cheese at the same time. It's a very interesting phenomenon that tells you more about the gullibility of humanity than anything else (and the defualt position is believing in the deity one is first introduced to as a child, of course). All answers are to be found in cherry-picked texts that came from an age when people had no or little idea about DNA, blood groups, atoms, electricity, plate tectonics, the expanse of the universe, x-rays, MRI scans and a million other things.
On the other hand, talking snakes and donkeys existed, people could be turned to salt, a virgin birth was possible and people lived untilthey were 800 years old. It's hugely fascinating as folklore but pitiful that people still believe it literally.

What fascinates me about religion is how so many otherwise intelligent liberal people are hooked by it

Poor , uneducated people were scooped up by the missionaries and the Spanish spread Catholicism into South America

The Africans were perfectly happy until the white man threw bibles around

So it's fascinating that people who are not poor and vulnerable and poorly educated are religious

But that's where the fascination ends , the rest of my involvement or interest in religion , God etc is focused on telling people trying to convert me to their form of this cult to naff off

My thoughts are that if you indoictrinate a child and make their mindset dependent on a paticular belief system it has very profound effect indeed. Those caught up in such a scenario don't seem to consider that they would have been an equally strong believer in a different religion if they were born in a different time or place. Childhood indoctrination is incredibly powerful.
Few people become strong believers in belief systems that they weren't exposed to as children.

My mother was from Irish Catholic stock and that lot are very devout

But by the time I was 13 I was lucky enough to have the cheek of youth to reject it all

I look back on some of that nonsense .....confirmation , first holy communion , waiting for hours and hours to see the pope when all I wanted to do on a Sunday was play football or go fishing .....I was always so bored

But a few of the ladies would dress well on a Sunday morning so it helped me pass the time

I bet most kids are bored rigid by all the faffing and nonsense , poor sods

    I think

Jesus said you would be forgiven for saying his or his father's name in vain, but not if you blasphemed the Holy Spirit, so I guess you've got nothing to worry about, Sludge.

No doubt Truthpaste will be along soon to correct me!

How do you know that Jesus said such a thing?

Cos it's in the Bible, of course. Mind you, according to said book, I don't believe Jesus ever claimed he was the son of God either.

Meanwhile, God's Word records the fact that He is the Son of God some 41 times - LINK.

You mix the word of god with your own desires so well you could easily start a cult. It's ironic that a guy called Stephen was the first Christian martyr and people mention the quality of his 'backbone' each and every day, some 2000 years after he died; he's someone who stood up for something factual and life changing, not fictional and fuzzy.

    1. Exodus 20:7 prohibits taking the name of the Lord in vain, essentially forbidding the misuse or disrespect of God's name. It states, "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain".

    2. Question is, is Jesus both Lord and God?

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” - John 20:27-28.
