Israeli data shows at least 98 Palestinians have died in custody since October 2023, and the real toll is likely substantially higher because hundreds of people detained in Gaza are missing, an Israel-based human rights group has said.

Physicians for Human Rights – Israel (PHRI) tracked deaths from causes including physical violence, medical neglect and malnutrition for a new report, using freedom of information requests, forensic reports and interviews with lawyers, activists, relatives and witnesses.

Israeli authorities only provided comprehensive data for the first eight months of the war. Over this period official figures show an unprecedented casualty rate among Palestinian detainees, on average one death every four days.



The real figure is in the hundreds.

Didn't boycott during the war. But boycott when there is a tentative peace and the event attempts to bring countries together under the banner of art.

There is no peace - just a slow down in the killing. Nearly 350 Palestinians, a large proportion children, have been killed (murdered) by the Israeli Occupation Forces since the 'ceasefire' and thousands starved and mutilated. No ceasefire, and hundreds killed by the IOF in the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria too (also a large proportion of them children) in breach of supposed ceasefires.

Eurovision is just 'culture-washing' the genocide just as UEFA and FIFA are sports-washing it. Normalising mass murder and daily war crimes, crimes against humanity and a continuing genocide. At least some European governments and broadcasters are standing on the right side of history.

Russia was banned from Eurovision in 2022.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves recently gave the keynote speech to Labour Friends of Israel . Here JVL member Diana Neslen responds. She started with talking about antisemitism and her shame at the fact that her own Labour Party had been “polluted with antisemitism”. She thanks various organisations such as the Jewish Labour Movement and the Board of Deputies as well as individuals such as Louise Ellman and John Mann for their role in helping to deal with that. Many of us remember things rather differently.

Like the rest of the Labour leadership, Reeves is proud to call herself a zionist, which she says is ‘…is not in spite of my belief in democracy and freedom and equality, but because of those beliefs’. Her ignorance of the racism and ethnic cleansing enshrined in the earliest tenets of zionism is astonishing and allows her somehow to claim that this shows her commitment to democracy even though the Israeli State, even when it is not committing a genocide, denies basic human rights, including the right to vote and the right to life, for millions of Palestinians who live under the brutal Israeli occupation.

What was important about Reeves’s speech was the clarity with which it laid out the views of this tortured, debased and complicit government.  The sycophantic genuflection to the Israel lobby, the distortions and lies about October 7th, the intensity of emotion about Jewish feelings and the need to reinforce the sense of Jewish victimhood while dismissing insensitively the catastrophic impact of the genocide on so many in the population, an impact which will be felt long after these self-serving politicians have left the stage.  Above all it is a sign that our government is well on the way to normalise genocide and to silence Palestine once again and a reminder that it is our task it to do all in our power to scupper their plans.
