Re: The Budget!
I'm not a practicing Accountant now; I design computer software. Who said anything about basic bookkeeping? There's nothing unethical at all about my comments, it's just you getting your knickers in a twist because you lost your bog cleaning businessOriginally posted by TWGL1 View PostWhat kind of accountant are you then as my wife is ACCA qualified and an FD for a large UK organisation.
I’ve done been a bookkeeper in my time but plenty of AAT types pass themselves off as accountants
I’ve only ask as you have been disclosing this information in the last few days, yet the way you have ridiculed my own business sounds totally unethical and against the code of practice, especially when you rely on people like me to make a living with what is essentially basic book-keeping which you have stated you undertake..

Re: The Budget!
The average pub landlord puts up beer by between 0.20 and 0.45 a year now, some really greedy types a lot more. It's not the Government which is going to affect beer pricesOriginally posted by goats View PostOne whole pence off a pint….wow that will fill the pubs back up too….genius

Re: The Budget!
I know, like what’s the point in even dropping one pence? What’s the tax on every pint these days?Originally posted by Dorcus View PostThe average pub landlord puts up beer by between 0.20 and 0.45 a year now, some really greedy types a lot more. I don't know about tax but the pubs are greedy sods. I can't understand how the same pint can cost £6.25 in one pub and £3.75 in another!Originally posted by goats View PostI know, like what’s the point in even dropping one pence? What’s the tax on every pint these days?

Re: The Budget!
Like I said, I didn't find it a wildly exciting budget, which is no bad thing, and it doesn't really impact me at all.
This annoys me though. On top of the Bus cap increasing. Freezing or reducing transport fares is exactly the kind of radical thinking that I would absolutely welcome.
Train fares going up 5%

Trains are just ridiculous these days, the wife has to go to London for some work conference Monday, £140 return.Originally posted by JamesWales View PostLike I said, I didn't find it a wildly exciting budget, which is no bad thing, and it doesn't really impact me at all.

Re: The Budget!
The lunacy of rail fares doesn't seem to get much traction with political parties.Originally posted by goats View PostTrains are just ridiculous these days, the wife has to go to London for some work conference Monday, £140 return.
It has been like this for at least 30 years.
Pay on the day fares are extortionate. Tickets bought in advance and/or through splitting the journey can be close to affordable. If you have time to plan ahead and you know the system tickets can be a fraction of the cost if you don't.
Why? Apart from train operator (excess) profits where is the logic? We should be promoting good quality, affordable, public transport with fares that encourage work, leisure and tourism - and reduce the number of cars clogging the roads and pumping out greenhouse gases.
But no manifesto or budget that I can remember has ever tried to get a grip on this.
Back in the mid 1980s there were loads of buses and trains (quality maybe not so good), a lot of cheap bus fare areas where local councils put in subsidies that were recouped through other parts of the local economy, and trains that were affordable. Then Thatcher, privatisation and market mayhem!
I doubt this is the government that will change it.

Re: The Budget!
It's one of the things that really does frustrate me and which I think could be changed quite easily. These trains are running anyway, often near empty, certainly rarely full.
I do appreciate that you can't sell all the tickets at knock down price on the day to fill the seats but the complexity of the prices as well as the prices themselves are so frustrating.
On the other side, I have a friend's and family Railcard which is excellent. Me and the kids can routinely go to places like Swansea or Bristol or Cheltenham for the day for £10-20 for all of us.
It can be done and would be very popular and in my mind wouldn't cost a fortune, but I guess it'd easier said than done.
On the flip side, British cross country coach travel is very good and very cheap, with National Express, Flixbus and Megabus, this is a network that seems to work.

Mainly because the brewery puts the price up every year.Originally posted by Dorcus View PostThe average pub landlord puts up beer by between 0.20 and 0.45 a year now, some really greedy types a lot more. It's not the Government which is going to affect beer prices
Not to mention insane energy prices that have skyrocketed over the last few years.
