I only found out last week that children in America have to swear the oath of allegiance every day in school - explains a few things I suppose.

They don't have to do it, but I gather it is a fixture of a great many schools, particularly at elementary and middle schools etc.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostI only found out last week that children in America have to swear the oath of allegiance every day in school - explains a few things I suppose.

Re: Ignorance on my part, but……….
There’s been court cases backing a child’s right to refuse to swear allegiance every day, but there must be tremendous peer pressure on someone thinking of saying no to them.Originally posted by JamesWales View PostThey don't have to do it, but I gather it is a fixture of a great many schools, particularly at elementary and middle schools etc.

There's a very good explanation of it on You Tube by a person called Girl gone London. She is an American who has lived in the UK for years and she likes to contrast and compare the two cultures.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostI only found out last week that children in America have to swear the oath of allegiance every day in school - explains a few things I suppose.
Her analysis of the different attitudes to patriotism in each country is very interesting and she explains the US oath of allegiance aspect in schools particularly well 👍

That sounds like the film on You Tube I watched that made me aware of it - it is the same one.Originally posted by Dorcus View PostThere's a very good explanation of it on You Tube by a person called Girl gone London. Re: Ignorance on my part, but……….
I attended some Native American pow-wows about 20-25 years ago and knowing how much the indigenous population was cruelly persecuted by the white man in so many ways and that many of them live in poverty on wastelands I was taken aback that they hoist the star-spangled banner and sing the national anthem at such events.Originally posted by Tuerto View PostAlthough they don't have to believe in it.

It was a statement, and to understand America you have to look at their history.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostYou’re jumping to a lot of conclusions there - all I was doing was saying that it makes me understand American attitudes more.

Phew, think I got away with it, you forgot to prepend middle aged to white man. i remember quite a while back when City fans were getting bad press every other week, the CCMB god squad were so quick to point out that it was just a minority, we even had a poster on here who went by the name of "City Fans Blamed" my argument could be i'm a tad older than middle aged. So just might have escaped your generalization.Originally posted by Taunton Blue Genie View PostI attended some Native American pow-wows about 20-25 years ago and knowing how much the indigenous population was cruelly persecuted by the white man in so many ways and that many of them live in poverty on wastelands I was taken aback that they hoist the star-spangled banner and sing the national anthem at such events.

I think it's more like singing in assembly etc. Some will do it, some won't. I know it's not compulsory nationwide.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostThere’s been court cases backing a child’s right to refuse to swear allegiance every day, but there must be tremendous peer pressure on someone thinking of saying no to them.
I think daily things like this are way too much. But I do believe in states and fostering love of ones community, society and country, as something that unites us all
