Here we go. Another Championship season descends into farce. Reading next no doubt.

Yes, teams should never be deducted points, promotion and relegation should only ever be determined by on the pitch results.

Who cares if teams fail to play players and fail to abide by agreements made by the league to protect players wages?

the farce is a club making a bunch of signings in January and then 2 months later they can't pay their wage bill

Logic dictates that you're attempting to be clever with your sarcasm, but my belief is that promotion and relegation should indeed only be determined by results on the pitch. I believe financial rule breaches should be punished by sanctions against club owners and directors.

So, Wigan are definitely going to be relegated. Does that benefit their players?

Not a good situation, players not being paid. In fact not a good situation, anyone not being paid. Where’s the scrutiny re. Club owners etc?

Indeed. Almost as farcical as clubs being allowed to run up enormous debts and service those debts with loans from various companies controlled by owners and directors.

                  The owners might think twice.

They'll lose more than they would get fined.

Reading this thread before clicking on the link, I was assuming Wigan had been deducted about fifteen points. Even at this stage of the season, three points can be made up quickly I wouldn’t be so quick to write them off yet.

They've won once in their last 19 games. They are bottom of the table with the worst goal difference in the division. They are 8 points adrift of safety with 8 games to play. They're done.

Wigan entered into agreements with the league about honouring contracts, ringfencing money going forward.

Wigan have shit all over that.

What sanctions are magically going to be applied against the owners and directors then?

Wigan were rightly deducted points. If not, what on earth is the point? Owners, directors take the piss by for example making illegal payments to players, gaining an advantage over other clubs, and there should be no points deductions?

The time to recognise dodgy owners is before the take over, whatever they call the fit and proper person test these days is a joke.

Their manager has got something about him and they got a good point on Saturday. If they could get a fortress mentality about them, it might not be over for them - I think it’s reasonable to assume that least one of the bottom three are going to have a good run to finish their season - they win five games and they’ve got a chance.

So how exactly would that work?

You can be a director of a business in the UK and struck off, banned from holding director posts for a time period as a consequence. That's after the fact, how can it be checked in a football context before taking over?

If an owner / director has a history of wrongdoing, then I would agree they should be blocked from being involved with football but there are ways and means around that.
