    Re: Mark McGuinness

Has anyone stopped to consider that maybe the player wants to leave?

He'll get way more money, a better chance of playing in the PL, and he gets to move back to the area he grew up in. If I was McGuiness I'd definitely be telling the club to make a deal.

Also not sure what else the club can really do? Force him to stay? They tied him to a long term contract which put them in a strong negotiating position. Theyve made a huge profit on what they paid for him. And they've got a replacement through the door straight away.

In most cases it would be considered good business.

you could argue that Etete is a pretty similar signing to the McGuiness one- yes it hasn't worked out to the same result, but if it was that easy to buy a player for a few hundred k and flip them for £10 million then everyone would be doing it.
if somehow he scores 10-15 goals this season then he's probably gone for a similar amount.
most of our other signings are frees or loans, so you don't have to worry about getting a return on the transfer fee invested (so you can consider older players).
exception is Turnbull who we apparently spent a couple of million on
We can't give Wintle away. We've been signing young players on the cheap, and signing over the hill players for big money. It is backwards. We have now got zero players that would get into a top 6 side. The club is a complete and utter mess. Don't get me started on Turnbull :hehe:

        Exactly.

But he doesn't want to leave. I'm far from an ITK but as reliable a source as is possible (other than the player himself) has stated that the hold up is due to MM being happy in Cardiff and not wanting this move. Apparently the finances of the deal are favourable to both City and MM.

Robertson and Daland are that type of signing. As someone else has pointed out Etete was (I haven't given up on him yet). And of course Tanner could be the best of them given time. His left footedness will always add value.

But generally our transfer dealings have been poor, that's why there is so little resale value in the current squad.

              That won’t suit Sludges narrative

There is no universe where Tanner will be sold for £10m

The timing is unbelievable, after two shambolic defensive performances without him!

Still, IF the money can be used sensibly for a decent Striker, replacement, and a new keeper it could come good!

You can keep grizzling about the need for a new keeper if you so desire, but Horvath is going nowhere. And bear in mind your hero in the dugout has already signed two keepers since he got here - one was terrible, the other is Horvath. Are you hoping for third time lucky?

This piece claims Arsenal may have had a sell-on clause in the transfer deal when McGuinness came to us (on a free).

It all sounds a bit third hand and vague - but if there is such a clause and it is 20/25% that will take the shine off the headline. Also most of the reports (WOL included) are now reporting 'up to £10m' if a series of targets are met.

Daland might be but he's a year older than McGuinness now. If we're going to make serious money on him, he needs to be very good immediately.

I seem to remember that there was a sell on clause. Thinking back, there was some surprise among Arsenal fans that they were letting him go for nothing and, logically, there would be one wouldn’t there?

we aren't going to make that kind of money on every signing, but there should be at least the potential to make a profit or get our investment back.
unlike for example spending £4m on a 30 year old Aden Flint.

Man, what I wouldn't give to have Aiden Flint playing up front for us now! :hehe:

We need to make those sort of signings. We cannot afford (literally) to sign 4m players that we can't sell for more in the future.

The rest of our squad is over 28 or "kids" that are a lot older than you think. King, Davies, Conte will be 22 in 2024, Evans and Bagan will be 23. It is going to be a hell of an ask for anyone not named Colwill or Kpakio to make it. It isn't their fault they've been messed around, either.
