  • Scotland v Ukraine

Who would be the better opponent in terms of winning ?

I think I’d prefer Ukraine, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if Scotland get a bye and end up playing us.

    Re: Scotland v Ukraine

If they do get to play, the whole of the world is going to be wishing that Ukraine win, and qualify for the World Cup. Imagine having that weight against you. But whether they actually get to play their game remains to be seen. It would be very harsh if they were ruled out, and Scotland given a bye, so maybe Ukraine themselves will have to withdraw.

Talk of Scotland getting a bye, is grossly unfair.

If Ukraine were to drop out, the next available team, should play Scotland

I tried to have a sensible discussion about this a few weeks ago but it didn't happen. I'm looking at pictures this morning of a Ukraine that looks like it's WW2. I find it impossible to even contemplate the thought of international football being played either by them or against them. Their own government decreed under martial law that men between the ages of 18 and 60 are banned from leaving the country.

How can we talk about something as banal as football (in comparison to being shot at, bombed etc) and link it to any excitement to a World Cup match? Yes, I'm a f*cking killjoy, but it makes me sick, upset, and with a sense of injustice and hopelessness.

In my view, the whole f*cking tournament should be scrapped and all the world should be united in that too. But yay. We get to strutt our own national feathers and all's OK with the world. Sorry guys.

There are wars all over the world at any one time. It just happens that the war in Ukraine is getting a lot more coverage than other wars in the world. There are famines in the world too. On that basis should we just stop playing sport altogether?

              Back to the original question.

Id prefer to beat Scotland and lose to Ukraine.

              Id rather play Scotland.

The key to everything is Bale and Ramsey being fit.

I agree. Think Scotland will quite rightly get a bye if the Ukraine cant field a side on the rearranged date. As brutal as it seems, life goes on in the rest of the world.
Finally get a chance to exact revenge and knock the sweaty socks out!

                    Re: Scotland v Ukraine

When I say lose to Ukraine i mean I still want to win but if we lose so be it.

Losing to Scotland would be similar to losing to Swansea.

It's what they should do, but they didn't replace Russia with anyone - just gave Poland a bye

So we play a qualifier and the jocks get a bye !

Not really fair is it ?

Based on World Rankings I guess that would be Italy. Sounds like a plan!

We should most definitely stop playing international sport i.e sport that represents a country, yes. It's a powerful message and we shouldn't be continually compliant and complacent when it comes to such a huge sport with the kind of influence that football has.

You make a valid point about the Ukraine war getting more coverage. The thing is, whether we like it or not, we're involved.

We can't just bury our heads in the Qatar sand either. The only right, correct, moral, and ethical thing to do is say, no, we're not taking part in a tournament in the country, in a stadium built on blood, forced labour, and oppression.

On another thread, people are horrified at the death of Gary Jenkins. Quite rightly too. It's heartbreaking. That attack involved vicious homophobia. Qatar imprisons homosexual men. It's uncomfortable, isn't it? I know. I hate it. I struggle with it. The worst thing we can do is ignore it.

And yet, I can’t help feeling that, if the Ukrainian people were to be the ones to decide, they would want their football team to represent them if it could.
