FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 3 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Re: FT: MIDDLESBROUGH 2 - 3 CARDIFF CITY. Match thread
Proper game of two halves that one.
I thought that first half was too good to be true.
3 points and 3 goals though, more than most of us would have expected I'm sure.

That second half was terrible for my well being, the only period during that 45 where I could breathe a sigh of relief was when Allsop was feigning injury for the second time. The rest of the half was just all Boro, all the time, and fortunate to avoid conceding more than 2 on the night.
Flipping back to the first half which feels like a lifetime ago, I was impressed to finally see Cardiff pressuring the ball and then if they find themselves in possession in Boro's 3rd of the pitch, they then did the unthinkable and committed more than one attacking player in the box. It was a sight to behold and has been long overdue. Some well taken goals and to see the team go in at half time 3-0 up was a complete but very welcome surprise.
However that second half was the polar opposite in terms of performance. Cardiff appeared content to sit back on their lead and give in to Boro pressure. There was no fight for the ball and between Kipre and Simpson, both put in a huge shift to see out the many attempted crosses and passes that were being pinged into the City box. The two quick fire goals, seemed to signal that Cardiff were on the verge of capitulation, but they managed to find their resolve and hang in there.
Give Boro their dues, they came out fighting that second half, but Cardiff cannot invite that type of sustained pressure when defending a lead. Tonight despite the first half performance really feels like a smash and grab.

Think Allsop may have been carrying an injury in the 2nd half- we seemed to stop passing back to him and instead sat really deep and hoofed it straight back to boro, rather than trying to pass out from the back. Nkonkou is a winger, not a defender.Kipre and Simpson both defended well. Result more important than performance tonight.
