Re: Would you take Mackay back?

Yes in a heartbeat. He's served a long sentence with some rubbish jobs ever since including his present one at a little known Scottish club. If that isn't sufficient penance I don't know what is. In the couple of years he was with us he achieved promotion and a League Cup final which we were unlucky to lose to Liverpool. Pretty good compared with our current situation I would say. I don't understand the "No he's rubbish" comment above. However, it could never happen given his dispute with the owner and his behaviour lives long in the memory.

My current choice for manager would be Rob Edwards who is available following his sacking by Watford. And no compensation would be payable which would make him more acceptable to the ownership.

Mackay was a very good manager for us.
Tan would never have him back though. It wasn't just the racial controversy, there were obviously issues with transfers and fees paid etc too.
I can't see Tan ever forgiving all of that.
Shame really, Malky was as good as we've had for the most part.

When Dave Jones was sacked I don't recall lots of City fans being upset over it. Every season we'd find a way of failing to get promotion. For each scintillating performance and win there was a dire 3-0 home drubbing or a miserable performance against the strugglers. We'd talked for seasons about the lack of backbone in our midfield. Decisions like not playing Ramsey in the cup final and using Etuhu up front in the play off final still get the odd mention over 10 years on.

Malky inherited a squad bereft of most of its best players, yet he created a squad from little money that surprised everyone by making the League cup final and the playoffs. Losing only 9 league games that season was our best in the second tier since 1970/71. We played some great stuff that season and Peter Whittingham became even an better midfielder, one more willing to help out defensively. From memory, most City fans were delighted to be in the playoffs. We probably weren't a top 6 side on paper but we worked hard all over the field. West Ham thrashed us over 2 legs but it had been an enjoyable season.

We started 2012/13 in rip roaring fashion, then Nicky Maynard got injured. We lost 5-4 at Charlton and Malky realised we weren't going to win promotion unless we sorted out defence. From then we changed our style to being even more difficult to beat that could pinch goals at the other end. Up until that Charlton game we were scoring at 2 goals a game, but letting too many in as well. After that we scored 41 from 31 games.

Malky was one of the best managers we had for reacting to changes during a game. His preparation was very detailed. Fans sang his name more than we did his predecessor. He was a popular manager, probably more so than Jones was during his time with us, yet Malky now seems to be the manager who fecked up when he bought Cornelius and only won the Championship when he had lots to spend (not all that true).
I was gutted we lost Maynard, he looked in tip top form before that injury.

He was a good Manager, just not sure what he could do with the current squad, his squad was far superior.

          no, not a chance.

he was the right guy for that moment, but he's done nothing since leaving us to suggest that he is worth another go.

we were a top championship side when he took over and he made us more difficult to beat and it worked a treat and was able to build on a core of top championship players he inherited from DJ.
we were actually very direct under him, we went long in the premier League under him more often even than we did under Warnock.
he would be totally the wrong guy for us now

This core of Championship players he inherited - only Whittingham, McNaughton and Hudson were regular starters under Jones. Mackay chose Marshall over Heaton. Of the 13 players who made over 20 appearances for us in the league that season, 9 were brought in by Malky.

It's a pity that there aren't Championship stats from the time as I reckon Jones's side was even more direct than Malky's.

My favourite manager of recent years...though it's a different thing to want him back. I can't see that happening and not sure it would be a great idea

whittingham, McNaughton, Hudson, 2 quality goalkeepers , mcphail played 27 games for us as well that season. its not a bad start to a championship squad.

Jones teams could be direct for sure, but we could do it with a lot more control and precision than we were under malky in the premier League.

they both had their strengths, but if we had to have one back now it would be Jones over Malky for me, we need someone to build us up into a top championship side over a few years, not get us over the line from a decent starting point.
                each to their own though

Why? What's he done since he was sacked here (going on 10 years now, christ!)

I like Mackay but he’s done nothing of note since he left. There’s no indication he’s still an effective Championship manager.

Jones was involved in 4 promotion attempts and we blew them all. In his last two seasons he had an even better starting point than Malky had but we still bollocksed it up.

Anyway, to quote you, "he's done nothing since leaving us to suggest that he is worth another go".

yes I wouldn't have Jones back here either, but if given the choice id take someone *like* Jones over someone *like* McKay.
                          in my view
Jones built us up from a mid table at best club to being perennial contenders.
Malky made us harder to beat and more disciplined.

the stage we are at now I'd prefer the former than the latter, but it's all down to your own opinion. we are unlikely to be challenging for anything in the next couple of years either way.

He'd have to be a different manager as we haven't got a pot to piss in anymore unlike the last time he was here.
